GENERATION X - YOUR GENERATION / LISTEN [VERY RARE BOOTLEG DEMO]
In 1977 I was GENERATION X's manager. This record was my idea.
In early '77 Malcolm McLaren was keeping The Sex Pistols off the road to preserve the illusion that they were banned in Britain and The Clash weren't playing because they had no drummer. So Generation X enjoyed a huge popularity because we were playing all the time. We went into the studio and made demos and then as we got into talking to record companies, we got the bright idea to make our own "bootleg" single. We decided this would be a cool way to make the band look even more popular. We pressed 100 copies, everyone hand-wrote the labels, and then our assistant went down to Kings Road on Saturdays and walked up to punks and tried to sell them. His story was that he had stolen a copy of the demo tape and pressed up the record himself to make some money on the side...cynical punks didn't believe him!
Contrary to what others say, we did not sell them at gigs. I don't think that idea had been invented in 1977 - nobody did it. The whole idea was to make the record look like a proper bootleg - that the band was so popular, a fan had made his own record!
It features 2 tracks: 'Your Generation' and 'Listen' - these are early studio versions and different to the tracks later released on Chrysalis - with a slightly faster tempo, louder, rawer and all round much punkier sound. The disc has plain handwritten labels (not my hand btw) with GX-101-A1 PRE in the run off groove of the A-side and GX-101-B1 'Beep Beep' on the B-side.
THIS IS MY ONLY COPY SO ONCE IT'S GONE THERE ARE NO MORE.
As part of the sale I will include a Letter of Provenance telling teh story of how the record was made and guaranteeing its originality.
The record has NEVER BEEN PLAYED. It is in MINT condition. There are no marks and no scratches. The label is flawless, with no marks of any kind. There are no spindle marks.
I am posting other rare Generation X "Bootleg Singles" over the next few days.
