Description
Before they became Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, this quartet of Jersey Boys called themselves "The Four Lovers." Actually the band's name was originally "the Varietones," after Nick and Tommy DeVito and Hank Majewski joined up with Valli in 1954, but it was as the Four Lovers that they were signed by RCA Victor in 1956, and it was under that name that the boys made their first records together. They had a minor U. S. hit that same year with You Are the Apple of My Eye, but they were eventually dropped by the label after six additional singles failed to make a mark on the charts. Despite this setback they stayed together, playing clubs and lounges in the Tri-State area for a time before two of the original members called it quits. These vacancies were quickly filled and the new version of the quartet took the name "The Four Seasons," naming themselves after a Union, New Jersey bowling alley that had turned them down for a job in their lounge. The rest of their story is well-known to any fan of 1960s vocal stylings, as Frankie Valli's three-octave shrieking falsetto became one of the most familiar sounds to an entire generation. Here are the boys in their original form as a band represented here by their first Extended Play 45 (RCA EPA-869; cardboard photo sleeve grades EX, due to a light area of circular buffing in the group's name on the front and some age toning at the edges of the reverse; record is playable, grading VG due to surface marks but with very little wear at the hole).
