Description

Victor Record / Victor Monarch Record record from 1901 No. A-490 / A-491 - unique, one of a kind!.

I´m goin`to sell my very very unique record collection till the end of the year, beginning this week.

Please read this carefully:

Recorded on November 7th 1900.
-There was an "Improved Record" by Eldridge Johnson sold on november 4th 2019 ( USD 1.525.- ) with these cataloge no. A-490 and A-491. But reportedly to the Discography of American Historical Recordings ( DAHR ), they were recorded on november 6th, 1900.  So this record, here to sell, is another recording ( november 7th as engraved ) of these nursery rhymes. It´s unique! You will never find this one again.Next point is, that there are two different labels, till now, unknown. Even Michael Sherman wrote about this record on page 173 in his Collector´s Guide to Victor Records ( Revised Edition ), that there are only "Improved" and "Victor Labels" to be known.
Now, here is the other unknown one. With the Victor Company on one side. E. Berliner held shares of the Victor Talking Machine Company and so it´s again his "child".
In 1894 there were thin Berliner records pressed at the beginning of american record industrie. There was a double sided one pressed, which you can find in the Smithonion Institute. Too thin, so it didn´t work for sale. Even the very first single sided ones, from november 1894 till spring 1895 in a bit smaller diameter than 7", were made by thin material and didn´t last long.  When Berliner was refused to stop his business in may 1900, he began working with E. Johnson on a double sided disc, which was only allowed to play on the Berliner Gramophone ( see Sherman´s book on Victor Records - page 30; or "Both sides than" from Allen Koenigsberg in "The sound box" - December 2010 ). These records didn´t sell, probably only made for test.
So this is the only one with direct connection to Emile Berliner, which was sold. He was one of the shareholder ( 5% ) of the Victor talking Machine Company, which is named on Side A 490.
It´s unique.

Bought from a well known Berliner specialist, december 2019.
Still plays very well.
