Album Notes:

First Step is the debut solo album from the legendary Faces, originally released in 1970. Featuring a post-Jeff-Beck-Group Rod Stewart, along with Ronnie Lane, Ronnie Wood, Ian McLagan, and Kenney Jones, First Step includes the now classic “Three Button Hand Me Down”, and “Flying”.

Reissued on 180 gram vinyl in a deluxe gatefold jacket.

Faces (sometimes erroneously known as The Faces) are an English rock band formed in 1969 by members of the Small Faces after Steve Marriott left that group to form Humble Pie. The remaining Small Faces - Ian McLagan (keyboards), Ronnie Lane (bass), and Kenney Jones (drums & percussion) - were joined by Ronnie Wood (guitar) and Rod Stewart (lead vocals), both from The Jeff Beck Group, and the new line-up was renamed Faces.

Faces released four studio albums and toured regularly until the autumn of 1975, although Stewart simultaneously pursued a solo recording career, and during the band’s final year Wood also toured with The Rolling Stones, whom he later joined.

In May 2010, Faces announced plans to reform with former Simply Red vocalist Mick Hucknall as their guest vocalist.

On 7 December 2011, it was announced that the Small Faces/Faces would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the 14 April 2012 induction ceremony. On March 23, The Faces announced that they would reunite with Rod Stewart to play at the induction ceremony for the first time in 19 years. However, on the eve of the ceremony, Stewart bowed out due to a bout of influenza and Hucknall was asked to sing in his stead.

First Step was the first album by the British group Faces, released in early 1970. (The album is credited to the Small Faces on all North American issues and reissues)) The album was released only a few months after the Faces had formed from the ashes of the Small Faces (from which Ronnie Lane, Kenney Jones and Ian McLagan hailed) and the Jeff Beck Group (from which Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood hailed.)

It is generally regarded as their weakest studio effort, recorded too soon after the group’s formation, and reached no higher than #119 on the Billboard charts - though there was, of course, minimal sales expectations as this was a debut album. Highlights include “Stone”, “Three Button Hand Me Down”, “Shake, Shudder, Shiver” and the album’s centerpiece, “Flying”.

The album cover shows Ronnie Wood reading a copy of seminal guitar tutor “First Step” by Geoffrey Sisley.
