“Faust is a German krautrock band, originally composed of Werner "Zappi" Diermaier, Hans Joachim Irmler, Arnulf Meifert, Jean-Hervé Péron, Rudolf Sosna and Gunter Wüsthoff, working with producer Uwe Nettelbeck and engineer Kurt Graupner.

The group formed in 1971 in the rural setting of Wümme. They secured a lucrative record deal with Polydor and soon began recording their debut, Faust, which sold poorly but received critical acclaim for its innovative approach and established a devoted fanbase. Faust became one of the premier bands in the international appreciation of the genre that would eventually be known as krautrock.

Faust became one of the first acts to sign to Richard Branson's Virgin Records, who embarked on a marketing campaign somewhat daring for its time, aimed at introducing Faust to UK record-buyers in as big a way as possible. The Faust Tapes was a cut-and-paste album which spliced together a large number of bits and pieces from their extensive collection of private recordings, not originally intended for release, but widely regarded today as their finest work. Virgin issued it at the then price of a single, 48 UK pence (they did the same the following year with Gong's Camembert Electrique album except that by then the price of a single had gone up to 59 pence). The Faust Tapes reportedly sold over 100,000 copies but its low price tag rendered it ineligible for a chart placing.”

Condition of LP: 

Side 1, Vinyl   VG++  Well cared for, very clean, a few paper scuffs and some very light hairline scratches a stron VG++.  Label:  light spindle wear. 

Side 2, Vinyl  VG++ same as side 1.  Label:  very light spindle wear.

Cover:  NM- VG+   very well cared for,  Crisp and clean.  General shelf wear for an lp of this age.  Slight corner denting, no other sticker residue, folds, tears or writing.

Where did  I get these crazy grading ideas and why don't I rate records as "Excellent"?  Although I do believe they are in excellent condition, there really is no such grade for a record in the USA.   I have been collecting records for 30 years and take this seriously, especially on Ebay where record grading is essentially a joke.  I grade like I would expect a pro to grade.  If there are marks or imperfections I list them.  Near Mint records must be top notch to receive that grade. 

Many LP’s are Play-graded on a VPI Scout w/ Grado Statement Sonata cartridge.  If an LP looks unplayed and dead Near Mint, then I usually don’t play grade.  However if an LP is between NM and VG+, I often will clean it on a VPI 16.5 using a combination of Disc Doctor fluids and Super Vinyl Wash.  I then play grade it to be sure of condition. 

A general note about grading LP’s: 

I use the standard grading as defined by GOLDMINE.  It appears as follows on their website.

Look at everything about a record. It’s playing surface, label, and edges...under a strong light. Then based on your overall impression give it a grade based on the following criteria: 

Mint (M)   Absolutely perfect in every way. Certainly never been played, possibly even still sealed.(More on still sealed under "Other Considerations"). Should be used sparingly as a grade, If at all.  (I don’t use this grade).

Near Mint (NM or M-)   A nearly perfect record. Many dealers won't give a grade higher than this implying (perhaps correctly)that no record is ever truly perfect.

The record should show no obvious signs of wear. A 45 RPM or EP sleeve should have no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling.

An LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits or other noticeable similar defects. No cut-out holes, either. And of course, the same should be true of any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves and the like.

Basically, an LP in near mint condition looks as if you just got it home from a new record store and removed the shrink wrap.

Near Mint is the highest price listed in all Goldmine price guides. Anything that exceeds this grade, in the opinion of both buyer and seller, is worth significantly more than the highest Goldmine book value.

Very Good Plus (VG+)  

A Very Good Plus record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it.

Record surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experiences. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are "OK".

The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. The center hole will not have been misshapen by repeated play.

Picture sleeves and LP inner sleeves will have some slight wear, lightly turned up corners, or a slight seam split. An LP cover may have slight signs of wear also and may be marred by a cut-out hole, indentation or corner indicating it was taken out of print and sold at a discount.

In general, if not for a couple things wrong with it, this would be Near Mint. All but the most mint-crazy collectors will find a Very Good Plus record highly acceptable.

Very Good (VG)   .Many of the defects found in a VG+ record will be more pronounced in a VG disc. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound.

Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. The same will be true of picture sleeves or LP covers. However, it will not have all of these problems at the same time, only two or three of them.

Single LP shipped domestically in mailer with cardboard filler weighs  roughly 1.5+ lbs.  Add $1.50 for mailer and filler.

Add $0.25 cents for media mail delivery confirmation (free with priority mail).

Single LP’s shipped overseas are roughly 1 pound 9 ounces (LP plus 2 mailers and tape and filler).  Sometimes the weight is at or below 1.5 lbs, if that is the case the price for the initial LP drops to $13.60, plus 3.00 for 2 mailers and filler.  If the price is less, buyer will be billed the lesser amount.   I believe shipping overseas in a single mailer is a mistake.
