Rarity: Originals on MAM Records are very rare indeed with only around 500 thought pressed. This is a 1990 repressing made in even fewer numbers on Reflection, so arguably rarer still.

Brief Info: A one-off major rarity when issued in 1971 on MAM Records, pressed in meagre numbers and highly sort-after by rock collectors. Not only for its rarity, but this is an excellent album on its own terms. Originals rarely surface and then in what condition? So more than happy to offer this also elusive 1990 UK repressing on Reflection. It includes a two track seven inch single plus the full original album that includes the original artwork cover. Initially pressed to 425 units, it includes an 8-page booklet with full band information and is signed by a founding member Mick Hawksworth, formerly of Andromeda. It appears a second signature is below it as well, possibly Roy Sharland?, but is not certain. Fuzzy Duck were a short-lived heavy rock band formed by members of previous prog and rock bands – MAM Records wanted a rock band to offer some variety – but things did not progress well. The album got scant promotion and hardly any were even made. But such was the quality of the members, the album itself is very impressive and deserved better. Now a legendary piece and rarely seen. This 1990 repressing is virutually as-made, once played by myself. With the sheer rarity and prices of MAM copies, this is more than a compromise, it could be one of the few UK copies you are likely to own.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A single shiny coated format, uncredited, but references stated made in England. Includes the plain white inner and the signed booklet. Also the 7 inch, two track bonus single.

Cover Front & Back: A cover as famous as the legendary album itself, here reproduced in its fully glory. There is little to fault to fault on either surface. Any blemishes or creasing minimal, tiny and faint.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both mainly straight with any hint of rubbing little and light.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with any thickening tiny and light. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with barely any compression. All text near perfect.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this classic cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a basic open unlined white inner that is practically as-made.

The Booklet: EXCELLENT(++): with only the odd tiny tip crease. An 8-page booklet, the inside and outside back covers are unprinted. This one numbered 257 and signed by Mick Hawksworth and possibly Roy? The text very informative by Barry Winton, the pages held together by two original staples, all pages clean and fresh.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. Clearly made on a budget for this tiny private label, it has fine, wispy surface marks seen under light. Any other visual blemishes few and superficial. In fact this record plays very cleanly indeed with hardly anything unwanted. My play-grade was its very first, I purchased this ages ago from a friend who had a tiny batch of these. The album’s production is pretty average, but clean with no crackle, unwanted sounds or tracking issues*. The cover states best played at high volume, which when seen on other albums usually means it has limited dynamic range. I have never had or heard a MAM original, so I have nothing to compare it too, but would presume its largely the same? It seems obvious only limited funds were spent on this when first issued, so it is what it is. For sure, musically its excels and was a pleasure to hear on vinyl – the single (plays at 45 rpm) is the same. It proved an enjoyable play-grade and yes, volume helps bring out the detail more. This Reflection copy is now rare in its own right and for those wanting it on vinyl, well look no further – it’s here.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
