Description
Wilhelm Furtwangler conducts the Vienna Philharmonic in Beethoven's 3rd Symphony "Eroica" in this passionate and incomparable recording.
It's on its original red & gold "Nipper" German Electrola mono label (WALP 1060). This pancake pressing's vinyl is unbelievably thick and heavy. The sound of this disc is solid and detailed with a totally natural acoustic.
This was auditioned with Goldring 1042 (stereo) and Grado (mono) cartridges, and Sennheiser 600 headphones/Epos ES-25 speakers. Not a pefect copy, the record surfaces look good, but there's a small 1 cm wide scuff at the beginning of side 2 that sounds for about 30 revolutions. This spot skipped with the Goldring, played through with the Grado and its higher tracking force. Record sounded and tracked better in general with the mono cartridge. Maybe overall a VG, though I still derived enormous pleasure from it--there's a magnificently sumptuous sound here that somehow doesn't come through on subsequent reissues, analog or digital. The gatefold sleeve, though bright , is missing the (now admittedly useless) clear vinyl-lined inner pocket and some of the cloth tape, thus it's a G.
I've added a new VPI inner sleeve, and slipped the jacket into a new Japanese mylar resealable outer sleeve.
