Label Conditions: Two stunning clean examples of one of the most attractive record labels ever made. Both look fantastic and ultra fresh with any spindle traces tiny, few and faint. Although the impossibly fragile cover has wear, the record is far different matter and without any doubt, has barely been played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. A very good average for it’s era.

Rarity & Info: Very Rare: the rarest album on Pegasus. The term ‘lost folk classic’ could seldom be used more appropriately. This sold in minuscule numbers due to lack of promotion or tours. It went practically unnoticed and simply disappeared. This clearly talented band simply folded which was a great shame as this one-off album more than promised of great things. Like other progressive folk acts like Comus, who dared to sound ‘different’ from other acts around at the time, they were destined to not prosper and this very rare Pegasus album is highly sort-after by folk, progressive and record collectors in general. How many were pressed, I do not know, but this is an ultimate first issue anyway with the prized 1 G / 1 G mothers and stampers. A lovely set and the record in superb condition. The very soft card textured cover had little chance of long-term lack of wear and this has suffered like most all will. My pictures maybe over-exaggerate the wear on the back but for sure, it has some moderate ringwear, the front has far less and does actually look attractive (with blemishes). My first ever copy of this one and actually the first I have even seen, and for those seeking a copy, well a very decent cover and a superb record. Will these ever show without cover wear?, fairly unlikely and I cannot hold my breath that long.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Extremely High+: like High Tide’s second album, this is black, textured and made with soft card with a heavy record inside. It has little chance of avoiding rubbing, ringwear, creasing and sticker marks. The chances of me finding a better one is highly unlikely, so I have no qualms at all in offering this one especially as the record is exceptional and without doubt, hardly even played.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD: with flat matt and textured surfaces, printed on soft card too, all the ingredients for all the wear potential mentioned above. The inside of the sleeve has the correct rounded internal flipbacks for construction. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. A very rare cover and album, if this was on the Vertigo Spiral label, this would go off-the-scale.

Cover Front: A very distinctive, lovely, and almost unmissable cover, but sadly it was virtually ignored by the record buying public of the day. This front still looks attractive, the actual graphic has only light rim rubbing at the bottom and the same at the top. The girl’s face looks fantastic and has not been spoilt by wear or any grubbiness as can be seen on my close-up picture. There has been some small surface disturbance near the top right corner area, the original owner has tipped in a few small/very small areas and being black this is far less noticeable than other colours. My best guess is an old sale sticker removal, that based on logic but a guess only. Even the small areas of the gold ‘Fuchsia’ text has been skillfully ‘repaired’ in the odd small area affected. Creasing is mildly light and general rubbing not caused by the record’s rim, is minimal and barely any at all. The star area of the front being the girl’s head and hair is still looking fantastic and that I consider a massive bonus.

Cover Back: The back has nowhere to hide for ringwear and this has moderate instances near the bottom edge but again, I think my camera flash as over-emphasised this a little. Also at the top but far lighter and less. A little creasing again but no sticker marks this side and overall, taken for what it is – a reasonable back for a totally ruthless and unforgiving cover. Note the close-up picture of the band which is nice, and they will not be seen often elsewhere.

Top Edge: Moderate rubbing.

Bottom Edge: Only quite light rubbing – no tipping-in evidence on either.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear and no feathering and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Against all odds, this beyond delicate spine has survived with very little wear at all. Still solid, straight with minimal compression. The only text printed on this cover that retains most-all of its original ink and graphic, is PEG 8 in faint gold ink. This is not easy to see due this unusual ink colour, I have even searched under a magnifier for any other text, but I could see nothing else, and this could not have rubbed without the other ink of course, and most, as stated is still present.

Corners: All corners have moderate rubbing but retain reasonable shape with minimal softening to the fragile card.

Cover Summary: Not my best cover for condition it goes without saying, but sometimes rarity has to be considered and this is not one that will be seen or offered often. Still an attractive front and a decent back and the record more than compensates. Not a cover for the more discerning, but realistically, sometimes compromises have to be made on these ‘lost’ gems. For sure, it will please many collectors if not the connoisseurs – if you have doubts – do not bid.

The Inner Sleeve: The unlined plain inner is included. This has darkened with age but has a very neat crisp window and mostly secure edges (one small central split on bottom). This has ‘Patents Applied For’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. An absolute genuine first pressed copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks being very fine, few and showing little. Visually a super, and very rare record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful Pegasus record plays up to it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no significant pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this 1G/1G pressing I feel sure. Just finding one is hard enough in-itself. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly carefully handled. The cover has faired less well but the record is really lovely and very special. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this elusive prog-folk diamond. This record will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. Any doubts on cover condition, do not bid.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
