From The Cold Jaws Of Prison by Inmates & Ex-Inmates, Musicians & Poets from Attica,Rikers & the Tombs
Original stereo US-pressing from 1971 on FOLKWAYS RECORDS, FH 5403, deep-grooved blue label with silver lettering. Contains a 4-page insert with complete lyrics & comments on each track.
Produced by: “Soul Rock from the Rock. The genesis of Jazz. The rock we refer to is the prisons”.
Line-up: most of the time there’s a black male vocalist doing poetry slamming/proto rapping accompanied by congas and/or drums, there’s also a jazz-flutist on most tracks, sometimes there’s a bass player and/or a piano- or guitar- player.
Tracks: side 1:Cathedral– The Junkie – Down Went The Junkie – Daddy Daddy Come Dig Me – Lord I Want To be A Christian ---- side 2:An Open Letter – I’m A Dreamer - Screaming – He Arose.
Folkways always made “field-recordings”, so what you hear is pretty rough, concerning both the recording-quality and the rude & uncensored lyrics, but it all sounds pretty cool. Awesome flute-soloing (on one track there’s a nice effect of a distorted sounding breathing of the flutist, while his melody-lines are clean!), the bass is fat and the congas are real loud. There’s spiritual jazz, african percussions, thoughts on Black Power & Drugs and more. Rougher than The Last Poets or early Gil Scott-Heron, reminds of Will Crittendon & his Afro-Jazz Ensemble! The first 4 tracks on side 1 are real killer!!! Folkways later made 2 more legendary LPs in the same vein as the “Prison”-record: Sarah Webster Fabio’s “Juju...” and “Coltrane’s Equinox”.

Versand: Seit dem 19.10.2009 müssen auf deutschem Ebay in der Vinyl-Rubrik angebotene Schallplatten vom Verkäufer kostenlos innerhalb Deutschlands verschickt werden. Ich verschicke LPs sicher geschützt in professionellen LP-Versandkartons (also keine instabilen „Warensendungs“-Kartons!). Ich versende per Hermes als versichertes Paket.
Bitte beachten Sie, dass ich für die von mir bei Ebay USA eingestellten Platten weiterhin Porto auch für den Versand innerhalb Deutschlands berechnen darf, wobei ich nur das reine Porto von 4,00 Euro berechne, alle weiteren Unkosten für Verpackungsmaterial trage ich.
