Brief Artist & Album Info: Seventh and final album for this great British blues-rock band – almost difficult to imagine it was only 1972 when this fabulous band folded. Like the previous album Free at Last a little underrated title in their great catalogue but their trademark quality rarely lets up here. It includes their classic and popular single ‘Wishing Well’ and the beautiful ‘Come Together in the Morning’. Here the regular personel had changed and the line-up now was: Paul Rogers, Simon Kirke, Tetsu Yamauchi and Rabbit (John Bundrick). Kossoff plays guitar on five tracks but is not credited now as a band member as such on the cover. This is a very early pressed copy that includes the inner sleeve and deeply punched spine ends. Never easy to find with a clean cover, so many are grubby and darkened. This one not perfect with a little creasing and a couple of pressmarks, mainly seen right up close, but still setting an impressive standard and the somewhat elusive lyric inner in fine condition.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. This original has the deeply pinched, shaped spine ends. Printed and made in England by Robor. Includes the lyric and illustrated inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Clean and fresh looking with a couple of fairly light creases near the top. Two fine pressmarks near the top right corner are the main issue, they have modest visibility on a white cover but present nonetheless. Any grubbiness or ageing is very light and slight and this somewhat unforgiving front still looks attractive.

Cover Back: A few very fine and light surface creases but not a great deal else – any record impression is very mild and light.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both nigh-on perfect and dead straight with no friction rubbing or grubbiness worthy of mention, a rare sight on this cover.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp and crisp and guaranteed untrimmed. Even viewed end-on, this has barely any hints of thickening or burring traces. Record entered on this right edge.

Spine and Text: The star area of a very difficult cover. The deeply pinched spine ends are still impressive and retain excellent to near mint shape, later examples were routinely square, this pair are deeply pinched and retain great shape with no bending, creasing or noteworthy grubbiness. Solid, reasonably straight with just light traces of compression in places. All text is perfect and unworn and this shows minimal traces of darkening or toning. .

Corners: Any tip rubs show little on a white cover and very fine to excellent shape (at least) is retained – those delicate spine ends are undinked and crisp.

Cover Summary: A strong, if not absolutely perfect all-round example of this very fragile early 70’s cover, one that will still prove difficult to find much better. The general lack of grubbiness compensates for the pressmarks on the front that really do show little. This pleasing item should please many collectors but not the perfectionists.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a very thin paper and unlined inner, so central edge splits are no real surprise from record movement. Still a neat looking lyric inner that is so often missing altogether. The top opening has a curious mini flap on the back that I have not seen before. A little minor discolouration and hints of grubbiness, more on the back but hardly any creasing, just enough blemishing to remind of it’s near 40-year-old age.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence and my grading may be somewhat harsh with any surface marks few, light and faint, just seen critically under angled light. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This final Free album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or significant clicks were noted and this is a very fine pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
