“Free” was their second self titled album recorded and released in 1969. Album was produced by the head of Island Records, Chris Blackwell.
Paul Rodgers – vocals; Paul Kossoff – guitar; Andy Fraser – bass; Simon Kirke – drums; Chris Wood - flute on “Mourning Sad Morning”
This album cemented the songwriting partnership between Paul Rodgers and Andy Fraser, which had been glimpsed on Tons of Sobs with songs such as "I'm A Mover"; here, eight out of the nine tracks bear a Fraser/Rodgers credit. While Fraser and Rodgers made a strong writing partnership, tensions in the band increased and Kossoff, whose natural spontaneity had been given free rein up to then, particularly resented the restrictions of the new environment. Kossoff was so disillusioned around this time that he auditioned for the Rolling Stones as replacement for Brian Jones. Thankfully for Free fans the Stones decided on Mick Taylor and Free went on to achieve greater success in 1970 with the “Fire and Water” and “Highway” albums.
The album is notable for having innovative and striking artwork by Ron Rafaelli of The Visual Thing Inc. The cover is featured in the book “100 Best Album Covers”. Rafaelli made the cover by photographing his model with strobe lights to make a silhouette of her against a background, which he could then overlay the design on. Hence, the album has a striking design of a woman made of stars leaping across the sky.
