According to soul aficionados, Bert Berns' Freddie Scott LP "Are You Lonely For Me" is one of the greatest albums released during the golden age of Soul. Brought to Berns' Shout Records label by close friend and artist manager Carmine "Wassel" DeNoia, Berns took Freddie Scott into the studio and made some of the best work of their lives. The title track "Are You Lonely For Me Baby" went straight to number one on the R&B charts for four weeks, and Freddie Scott was voted Number One Newcomer in Cashbox Magazine. Only the death of Bert Berns prevented the world from truly knowing and appreciating the "distinctive, powerful and extremely soulful tenor" of the great Freddie Scott.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1933, Freddie Scott began singing with his grandmother's Gospel Keyes at age eleven. In the late 1950s, Freddie moved to New York City, where he worked as a songwriter for Aldon Music and a demo singer for a variety of songwriters and producers. But it was his hit single "Hey Girl" on Columbia Records in 1963 that put Freddie on the map. Unable to recreate that success with a follow-up hit, Freddie's manager Wassel convinced Columbia to release his artist (under threat of pain), and brought him over to Berns' newly established Shout Records.

With the overwhelming success of Bert Berns' Bang Records and it's ever growing roster of pop artists, Bert created Shout Records as an outlet for his greatest passion - R&B and soul music. The nine Freddie Scott singles recorded by Bert in 1966 are best evidence of this passion, from the hit "Are You Lonely For Me Baby" (recorded over 100 vocal takes) to the relatively unknown "No One Could Ever Love You."   And Freddie's impassioned take on Bert's epic "Cry To Me" is perhaps the best version of the song ever recorded.  Listen closely and you can hear the sound of Freddie's tears falling.

"One of the milestones in the history of real soul music... this album is like being in a deep soul heaven."   That's how the experts describe the work of Bert Berns and Freddie Scott. And like so many other of the artists associated with the life of Bert Berns, Freddie Scott's star eclipsed with the death of the songwriter and producer responsible for his most inspiring work. The great Freddie Scott passed in 2007.

This auction is dedicated to the memory of great late Bert Berns, legendary impresario, songwriter and producer (1929-1967), the owner of Shout (and Bang) records,  without  whom we would not have known the modern Soul music as we know it today. Bert Berns, wrote, produced and arranged some of their greatest songs for Isley Brothers, Erma Franklin, Van Morrison, Them, Neil Diamond, Strangeloves, Esther Phillips, Ben E. King, Freddie Scott (this album was produced by Bert Berns),  Barbara Lewis, McCoys, Solomon Burke and tons of other artists from the sixties, including some of the best known, and loved, songs of the era. It is a total, unredeemable disgrace that Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame still fails to induct and otherwise honor this Giant of Contemporary American Music. Earth to Cleveland, Earth to Cleveland? (a)          THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►click here (PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING A BID).

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)             Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 8:1.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

COVER IS NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP  (A SMALL PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a small cutout hole in one of the corners

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Front cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting and can be easily cleaned up after the shrink wrap has been removed)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.    (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-         Cover has one corner slightly worn (nothing significant)

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No wrinkles or creases
