Yeah, this stuff hits the spot. Groovy, intense, stoned and poetic, it's all wrapped up in some glorious acoustic interplay between Fred and four other "in the zone" guitarists and bolstered by some exceedingly rich double bass work by James E. Bond, Jr. Neil even comments at one point to Bond, "Imagine a twelve string bass...BWOIINGGG!" I can tell the grass was good by the infectious laughter the band shares between songs but Bond's bass needs no extra strings. He's got that deeply resonant Danny Thompson thing down pat.

There is profound beauty in tracks like Merry Go Round, where Neil sings, "There's a Jim Crow section on your merry go round but I can't find the back", but the real "Fly United" moments here come when the guys just spread out on some loose, transcendent jams, with Fred's haunting and haunted rich baritone voice flying in and out of the musical clouds. Like I wrote earlier, this is simply glorious stuff and it refuses to remove itself from my stereo. I will indeed be checking in on other Neil works in the near future. If you haven't yet heard Fred Neil, start here. At one point in the studio chatter, Fred exclaims, "Fly United....WHEEEE!" These skies may have elements of darkness but they are damn friendly and audially inviting. Kick back, light up and take off with Fred Neil and friends.
