After a three-year (1955 -- 1958) meteoric rise to international fame, Frankie Lymon (vocal) was ready to emerge from beneath the shadow of the Teenagers, with whom he'd scored the Top 20 pop entries "Why Do Fools Fall in Love," "I Want You to Be My Girl," and "Goody Goody" for Gee Records. It was just one of several labels founded in the mid- to late '50s in New York City by record producer George Goldner, Joe Kolsky, and nightclub owner Morris Levy. The trio felt Roulette Records, another of their "holdings," might prove a more suitable venue for Lymon to strike out as a solo artist. With his trademark falsetto still intact, the vocalist was paired up with Roulette's A&R department heads Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore -- one of the most important producing/engineering partnerships of the pre-British Invasion golden age of American pop music. Their contributions to Lymon's debut long-player Rock & Roll (1958) are particularly noteworthy. Nowhere is that as evident than the remakes of "Wake Up Little Suzie" and "Little Bitty Pretty One" as the singer can be heard double-tracking his own leads. The resulting resonance created a richer texture for the harmonies. Elsewhere, Lymon's phrasing on the wailing opener "Waiting in School," the swinging "It Hurts to Be in Love," as well as an update of the early West Coast R&B rave-up "Buzz, Buzz, Buzz" are among the best of the lesser-known titles. Here he likewise places his stamp on material that had become indelibly linked to other artists -- such as Elvis Presley and "Jailhouse Rock" or Paul Anka's "Diana." While a slight departure from most of the album, the jazzy and optimistic "Send for Me" and the midtempo ballad "Silhouettes" reveal Lymon's criminally underutilized potential as a crooner. Half a century after it its initial release, Collectors' Choice Music reissued Rock & Roll in 2008, marking its availability for the first time in several decades.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions  ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a small "paid" stamp on the back panel

-         Cover has a small original price sticker, which may be possible to remove with a little effort (we did not attempt to)

-         Back cover has a small, rectangular, sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker)

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing (except on the price sticker)

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
