One of the most ambitious debuts in rock history, Freak Out! was a seminal concept album that somehow foreshadowed both art rock and punk at the same time. Its four LP sides deconstruct rock conventions right and left, eventually pushing into territory inspired by avant-garde classical composers. Yet the album is sequenced in an accessibly logical progression; the first half is dedicated to catchy, satirical pop/rock songs that question assumptions about pop music, setting the tone for the radical new directions of the second half. Opening with the nonconformist call to arms "Hungry Freaks, Daddy," Freak Out! quickly posits the Mothers of Invention as the antithesis of teen-idol bands, often with sneering mockeries of the teen-romance songs that had long been rock's commercial stock-in-trade. Despite his genuine emotional alienation and dissatisfaction with pop conventions, though, Frank Zappa was actually a skilled pop composer; even with the raw performances and his stinging guitar work, there's a subtle sophistication apparent in his unorthodox arrangements and tight, unpredictable melodicism. After returning to social criticism on the first song of the second half, the perceptive Watts riot protest "Trouble Every Day," Zappa exchanges pop song structure for experiments with musique concrète, amelodic dissonance, shifting time signatures, and studio effects. It's the first salvo in his career-long project of synthesizing popular and art music, high and low culture; while these pieces can meander, they virtually explode the limits of what can appear on a rock album, and effectively illustrate Freak Out!'s underlying principles: acceptance of differences and free individual expression. Zappa would spend much of his career developing and exploring ideas -- both musical and conceptual -- first put forth here; while his myriad directions often produced more sophisticated work, Freak Out! contains at least the rudiments of almost everything that followed, and few of Zappa's records can match its excitement over its own sense of possibility.

Well, if this is not a part of Rock history, we really don’t know what is. This is the album that almost single-handedly defined every radical, subversive and in-your-face alt-Rock piece of music recorded over the ensuing 39 years. Not only is this one of the most creative and innovative albums ever made, it was a brainchild of one of America’s most important and brilliant avant-garde classical composers of the XX century. At the time this was recorded, Lenny Bruce was still around, and very much a de-facto touring member of the "Mothers", and his influence shows (and then some) in just about every aspect of Zappa’s lyrics and aesthetics – or lack thereof !  The album includes a ton of murky, quirky, whimsical musical ideas, not to mention what we think is the best anti-racism song ever recorded by ANYONE ("Trouble coming every day").

Just to put things in perspective: when this album was recorded, neither the Doors’ or  Pink Floyd’s or Jimi Hendrix’ debut albums were in existence, and the Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper” was still a year away. You can imagine, then, the near-cataclysmic impact this brutally abrasive, satirical, anti-pop-culture masterpiece must have had on the national psyche. The year was 1966, after all – and Frank Sinatra, the Girl Groups and Beatlemania were still reigning Supreme. One can literally visualize then, how playing “Freak Out” back-to-back with the Righteous Brothers or Dusty Springfield must have felt like: to an average American teen, Zappa’s debut must have sounded like a detonation from the Hell’s inner chambers. In many ways, it still does. And, lest we forget: the sound of the original MONO vinyl pressing will forever bury any CD version of this album you may have.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The records are pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(d)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)           The records come in their original stock inner sleeves.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Minor scratch mark noted on front panel

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams (nothing significant)

-         Minor yellowing noted on the INSIDE gatefold

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  / bent.

-        The gatefold cover has partially split seams on 1 out of 4 "legs" of the cover (about 2 inches / 1 inch = 2.5 centimeters).

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)
