Arguably Sinatra's best album after 1966, this set proves that one doesn't need to be Brazilian or speak Portuguese to understand or express the quality behind the bossa nova, saudade. Frank expresses the yearning behind The Girl From Ipanema and How Insensitive as well or even better than the Brazilian masters themselves. Frank never crooned so gently, subtly or intimately before or after he recorded this album. Antonio Carlos Jobim's guitar and Claus Ogerman's arrangements complement the Chairman in creating a dreamy midnight mood on this album. Ogerman's strings move like the gentle breeze one would feel on a night in tropical Rio while Jobim's strumming is at usual best. The rendition of Dindi here is especially rewarding. Its introduction with Frank crooning the poetic lyrics backed solely by Jobim's gentle guitar is too perfect to be described. The selection of American standards to be "Brazilianised" here is also impeccable for all three numbers contain as much saudade as the Brazilian classics on this album. It's a shame Cole Porter never lived to hear this version of I Concentrate On You, which is a marked improvement in interpretation by Frank when compared to his earlier swing and ballad versions. Interestingly, another classic guitarist, Al Viola, replaced Jobim on Change Partners as Jobim faced challenges playing the Irving Berlin classic. All in all, one of the best vocal bossa nova albums of all time; equal in stature to Getz/Gilberto and Elis & Tom. It's no wonder it received a nomination for Album of the Year at the 1968 Grammys.

Sinatra singing bossa nova? You must be kidding?! Well... never underestimate the talent of the man. At the very start, I wouldn't have bet a cent on this record. But, after listening to it reluctantly, I must confess the truth: this is arguably one of the best and most seductive of all Sinatra albums. Here, the Voice get languid and sensual as never before, surrounded by strings of satin and sunny notes by Mr Jobim guitar. A warm and conforting record. Very recommanded for the darkest days of the starkest winter. Brazil Vegas style? Yes, but with so much class.

(a)          THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED IN ITS ORIGINAL PLASTIC BAGGY (TYPICALLY USED IN THE MID-60s) AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►click here (PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING A BID).

(b)          The record is STILL in its original inner, perforated plastic baggy (sealed).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Back cover has a sticker residue (partially peeled remnants of the price sticker or some other sticker; the buyer can probably remove these small, still affixed bits and pieces of the sticker with a minor effort)

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on front side, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-        Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged
