Battiato's fourth album saw a release on Island UK (albeit in altered form) and it's easy to see why: there's more atmosphere here than most other "ambient" recordings of the era. Battiato combines synths, piano, electronics, voices, tapes into a musique concrete of effortless, hypnotic music. All the adjectives you can muster - dreamy, floating, avant, etc.. - they're all here. Check out the youtube clip:

This is a strange one. While still on the path to psych-out prog heaven, Franco Battiato obviously started to feel the pull of Eno and the Germans, who were at that same time quieting things down for a more introspective psychedelia, what with all manner of synths and pianos.

At face value, this is a fairly cut and dried ambient album, albeit with vocals and some disturbing sounds thrown in the mix.There are no real beats to speak of, that is if you don't count the arpeggio'd synth, which sort of goes for the Phaedra type rhythmic pulse and repetition.

The most "song" oriented tune here is "No U-Turn", which starts off with a nice synth blob, then builds up into an almost victorious crescendo, dabbling in backmasked and distorted male operatic voices, and Franco's own unassuming vocals, murmuring something modestly as the tune fades away. All in all a very nice, understated album by a truly unique artist.

UK Record Collector Grading System:

MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in the sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition.

EXCELLENT (US version of this term: Near Mint): The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in the sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD (US version of this term: VG++): The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover, or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD (US version of this term: VG): The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits etc.
