EXTREMELY RARE! This is the first time I have ever had one of these . ONLY 500 COPIES of these were ever pressed. How many are still in existence? Who knows... probably not many!
Before even being released to the public by Passport Records in Canada, this album was only available through CBC Radio Canada by mail order. And only 500 copies were pressed!
The bands's original 1976 lineup and presentation was very unusual; it consisted of just 2 people: Cameron Hawkins, appearing as a typical rock star at the front of the stage, playing synthesizer, occasional bass guitar, and lead vocals; and Nash the Slash, a mysterious figure in dark clothes lurking in the shadows at the back of the stage, playing electric violin, electric mandolin, backing vocals, and operating a drum machine. Aside from Cameron's bass, the group did not use guitars. The duo first met each other while they were jamming with a band called Clear.
The group first recorded in July 1976 when they performed live in the studio, an event which was videotaped for TVOntario's Night Music Concert TV show, first broadcast on November 3. The half hour show, shown with no commercial breaks, presented the band playing three long pieces: "Phasors on Stun", "One O'Clock Tomorrow", and "Black Noise". It also included a nonsensical biography of the group resembling free-association poetry, recited by David Pritchard (electronic musician, record producer and CHUM-FM DJ, 1960s-1970s), accompanied by electronic background music and a collage of photos and artwork by Paul Till, appearing between the first and second songs. Neither this music, nor any performances by the original 2-person lineup, were released on an album until 2001.
FM's first public performance took place in November 1976 at the A Space art gallery in Toronto shortly after the TV show first aired.
Some time after February 1977 the group became a trio when they added Martin Deller on drums. Deller had worked with Nash earlier in 1976 when they and David Pritchard played a 13 minute improvised piece titled "An Admission of Guilt" for Pritchard's album, Nocturnal Earthworm Stew.
After appearing on the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) TV variety show Who's New, FM were approached by the CBC to make an album, ultimately titled Black Noise, which the group presumed would be distributed in stores like a normal release. But the CBC chose to sell it by mail order, and only announced its availability during several radio shows. A mere 500 copies were pressed, which was sufficient to meet the demands of this limited promotion. The CBC edition's tacky black and white cover shows a picture of a manhole cover; a different cover by Paul Till was used for the later reissue on the Passport label.
In late 1977, Nash the Slash left the group for a solo career, stating that the addition of a drummer gave the band a sound which was too commercial for his liking. This comment would be frequently quoted in articles and reviews years later for irony, as some his later work, with and without FM, is viewed as being much more commercial and pop-oriented than the first FM album. Nash resumed his career as a solo performer in 1978, having also worked as a solo artist in 1975.

The original Canadian CBC mail order pressing is totally brand new, in unopened, unplayed condition and is STILL SEALED in the original factory shrink-wrap.
Although brand new and still sealed this particular copy does have a few issues. (Please take note of the scans above):
FRONT COVER
1. The top upper right-hand corner is slightly dented.
2. The lower bottom right-hand corner is slightly worn, with the shrink-wrap worn off and album cover cardstock is showing through the shrink and is slightly worn.
BACK COVER
3. There is a large crease right along the record outline where the album cover has been bent back. The vinyl is not damaged because of this and the crease is only visible on the back side. It is not visible on the front cover.
4. Along the left-hand side (the opening side) there is a medium size dent where the paper has worn away in approximately a ½" area. The shrink-wrap is also torn and/or worn away in this area and approximately 2 square inches of shrink-wrap is missing.
5. In the area where this shrink-wrap is missing there is approximately 2" of where the opening side of the album cover is not sealed. (see scan)
6. The lower bottom left-hand corner is severly dented with a bit of shrink-wrap missing and the corner is fairly worn. (see scan)

Overall, this is a pretty nice copy being in STILL SEALED condition and taking into account that it has been in storage for the past 33 years.

You may be wondering why some of our shipping rates are cheaper to the US than they are within Canada.
Canada Post is currently charging some rates which make absolutely no sense at all. All packages weighing over 250 grams must now be sent as registered mail within Canada. Unbelievable as it may sound... it costs us less to mail a vinyl phonograph record to Hawaii or Alaska than it does to ship it to the next province within our own country!

Still Sealed: Original factory seal. Never opened. Never played. Perfect condition.
Mint: As stated. Like new with no defects
Near Mint: As stated near mint, or mint minus, same thing, very clean with no defect to sound or visual appearance. One scuff or mark may be permitted but it will be mentioned in the description. A near mint record looks and plays very clean.
Excellent: Not much below near mint, may have a delete hole and/or a minor defect or two not visually detracting from the record cover, the vinyl will appear shiny and in clean condition with very minor surface defects not affecting the sound, still very clean and very collectable!
Very Good: Still a very nice copy with minimal cover wear and/or delete marks or splits. Still visually appealing, the vinyl will retain its original gloss and can have some minor scuffs/scratches that don't affect the sound that much.
Good: A little more cover/ring wear and/or delete marks, seam splits, etc. The vinyl will still retain much of the original gloss but with a bit more scuffs and/or scratches.
Fair: Obvious cover/ring wear which is starting to detract from the cover's appeal. The vinyl will have obvious scuffs and/or scratches which affect the sound.
