This Peter Green-led edition of the Mac isn't just an important transition between their initial blues-based incarnation and the mega-pop band they became, it's also their most vital, exciting version. The addition of Danny Kirwan as second guitarist and songwriter foreshadows not only the soft-rock terrain of "Bare Trees" and "Kiln House" with Christine Perfect-McVie, but also predicts Rumours [HELL, NO, IT DOES NOT -- THIS HAS NOTHING IN COMMON WITH RUMOURS -- OP. ED.]. That only pertains to roughly half of the also excellent material here, though; the rest is quintessential Green. The immortal "Oh Well," with its hard-edged, thickly layered guitars and chamber-like sections, is perhaps the band's most enduring progressive composition. "Rattlesnake Shake" is another familiar number, a down-and-dirty, even-paced funk, with clean, wall-of-sound guitars. Choogling drums and Green's fiery improvisations power "Searching for Madge," perhaps Mac's most inspired work save "Green Manalishi," and leads into an unlikely symphonic interlude and the similar, lighter boogie "Fighting for Madge." A hot Afro-Cuban rhythm with beautiful guitars from Kirwan and Green on "Coming Your Way" not only defines the Mac's sound, but the rock aesthetic of the day. Of the songs with Kirwan's stamp on them, "Closing My Eyes" is a mysterious waltz love song; haunting guitars approach surf music on the instrumental "My Dream"; while "Although the Sun Is Shining" is the ultimate pre-Rumours number someone should revisit. Blues roots still crop up on the spatial, loose, Hendrix-tinged "Underway," the folky blues tale of a lesbian affair on "Like Crying," and the final outcry of the ever-poignant "Show Biz Blues," with Green moaning "do you really give a damn for me?" Then Play On is a reminder of how pervasive and powerful Green's influence was on Mac's originality and individual stance beyond his involvement. Still highly recommended and a must-buy after all these years, it remains their magnum opus.

The first full album by the five-piece Mac, adding teen prodigy Danny Kirwan as a third guitarist who was also a fine songwriter and vocalist. Kirwan's presence expands the group's sonic palette considerably, mixing their traditional blues sound with a more progressive rock approach. The result is the best album by and far of the Peter Green era.

Green's contributions seem to mark a slow descent down his own path to mental illness; listen to tracks such as 'Showbiz Blues", "Closing My Eyes" and "Before the Beginning". At the same time he turns in the fun "Rattlesnake Shake" with one of the dirtiest guitar lines they ever committed to tape. Kirwan turns in some haunting tunes like "Although the Sun is Shining", "Coming Your Way" and "When You Say" (also "Without You" on the UK version, though that song is on the US compilation "English Rose"). The US version also adds the incendiary but doomy "Oh Well".

Peter Green would leave the band mere months after the release of this album. It might've been interesting to see what paths the Mac would've taken had he stayed, considering the huge leap they'd taken with this album.

Note: there are two different US versions of this album, the second version removing "When You Say" and "My Dream" in favor of "Oh Well". CD issues combine both versions into a 13-song album.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant); Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold

-        Visible shelf wear noted on the top seams

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (nothing significant)
