Label/Format: Reprise – Yellow, pale green and black steamboat originals with more matt, smooth surfaces (‘tri-coloured’ Reprise format, please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, very fine, on the lesser-side-of-moderate in number spindle marks with only modest visibility. Their fineness is clear indication this record has not been played on mono record players and the quality of the sound hardly diminished.

Cat Number: RSLP 9000.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 168 grams. Even by Reprise Records standards from this era of quality, this is a real heavyweight.

Rarity: Scarce: even more so in very fine condtion. The cover, fairly soon to be changed to a totally different format and design, is vastly prone to all forms of wear. Mainly due to the sheer weight and thickness of the record The thin card highly intolerant and with a dark back, ring wear is rarely avoided. Also the record has very fine and compact grooves, being longer than most rock albums of the time clocking in at around 53 minutes. The delicate information and sound very easily damaged by heavy tracking records players of the time. This was not issued in mono, hence many copies were still used on basic mono equipment of the time. An album with many quiet passages and songs, and nowhere for blemishes to hide. So an intolerant and difficult album, finding ones that still offer quality sound with little unwanted are a real challenge. This is a very fine all-round example and one of the cleanest originals I have yet had to offer.

Brief Info: The third Fleetwood Mac album and the first of their original albums to feature Danny Kirwan and the last with Peter Green. Also now departed from Blue Horizon, this the first on Reprise, this is my personal favourite of the early Fleetwood Mac. An album that has been revamped and changed over time, making the first UK issues with the original song list, sound and first design cover very collectable. More so when found in strong conditions as all elements of the set are fragile. One of the longest single rock albums of the time, and not far off double the length of early Beatles albums, the playing surfaces and material often mean groove wear, damage with worn noisy sound often the norm. So only lesser, carefully played have any real chance and this is a nice copy. The cover with far less wear than usual and the record delivery enjoyable sound, even played on very sensitive equipment (as listed further down). I think a ‘silent’ copy of this album is a near impossible ask but any blemishes on this copy are very light and indeed very infrequent. The album now introduces a more rock sound into the blues material, some songs are very quiet and fragile, and for my money, this is the very best of the Peter Green trio of early albums. Not quite for the absolute perfectionist, but many fans and collectors are sure to enjoy this, it will never prove easy to beat.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and even such examples are difficult to locate. An unlaminated gatefold format with the original ‘Domesticated Mural Painting, by the English artist Maxwell Armfield. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and includes the original polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Front: One of the least-worn examples I have seen, this almost refuses to age well. As stated, the massively thick and heavy first issue records cut into the card and that means ring wear. Clearly, the front is less prone to that, but is far from unknown. This has none and the splendid graphic looks superb with little to fault. Fine traces or rubbing on the very edges and some tip rubbing, but not a great deal else. Very few marks or blemishes and the lack of creasing, another major plus. Clean, still fresh with lovely rich colour and no sticker marks or issues. This front sets a very high standard.

Cover Back: All very similar with just a light and faint rim arc rubbing at the 12, 9 and 6 o’clock positions. In terms of this – again I remind it has had a near 170 gram record inside for 45 years – it is minimal and few will show a great deal less. Some tip rubbing, but overall rubbing on this unforgiving surface, almost as light as it gets with hardly any creasing again.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A tiny hint of toning apart on the odd small edge area apart, this inside is superb with little else to fault. Also hardly any hint of rim impression which is almost an amazing feat.

Top Edges: Both straight with very little wear. A few small chip to the darker back, little else.

Bottom Edges: Any rubbing very light and gentle and showing little on white card. Any marks small as well, all quite commendable for these traditional storage edges that are clearly more vulnerable to wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with very little wear, any thickening or burring very mild and faint as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, both are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. Again, this area is VERY prone to wear and damage and is seldom seen without it. The surface artwork is nigh-on fully present and intact with any rub traces tiny and faint. No text was printed on this, the graphic simply flow around (AND STILL DOES). Even the folds have avoided any rubbing of note and even with a little natural crinkle, this spine can be considered exceptional.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubbing All retain fine to very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile and unforgiving 1960s cover, one very likely to prove very difficult to find much better. Again I remind, later versions of this were changed to a very plain, basic single format sleeve that did even compare to the beauty of this original version. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain white polylined inner that is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. A couple of corner creases, but clean, fresh with all edges unsplit with no repairs. Both window circles crisp and totally undamaged with a very clear lining.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better for a long record with very fine grooves. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and massively pressed. I consider any record over 160 grams to be a heavyweight, and few standard original records exceeded it often. A copy with fairly modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks mostly very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. The odd slightly thicker one than a hairline, but barely anything sounds to any major degree. The only exception, is a moderate click between the first and second song on side two, this being the biggest blemish on the entire album, which hopefully should reitterate how fine this copy really is. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: With quite a lot of challenging quiet songs and passages, this way above average duration record plays up to, and most-all above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, even with quite compact, but deeper grooves on a very thick record. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – mere traces only and finding one that will have less or none will prove immensely difficult, even near impossible. The tiny tick or two and one moderate click as mentioned above on side two after the first song, no others anything like as noticeable and given all the perils this fragile album faces, an exceptional clean pressing. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Yes, it has been played a few times, but I suggest, mostly with due care and it would not take much to badly mark this record for sure. Nothing, the one moderate click I suppose apart, spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. I can easily accept and little VERY gentle reminder I am playing an original 1968 record rather than a squeaky clean digital version, that is almost part of the experience, and I do reitterate, any unwanted sounds on this are very faint indeed, and equally infrequent. This also plyaed on very sensitive equipment listed further down. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. I pride myself on offering a variety of genres to keep my site as interesting as possible. I will rarely offer any record that falls below a true Excellent grading, unless its of a certain rarity which will justify offering a lesser grade. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
