Label Conditions: Both in clean condition, spindle marks are less than moderate and mainly fine and only show under angled light.

Cat Number: S 69011.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: The earlier copies are much scarcer than later ones. This is a much heavier pressing and has the original cover format with a single thickness front and with inside entrance for the record e.g. via the centrefold near the spine hinge. Later ones has conventional side entrance and were much thinner pressed.

Musicians: All the early members of FM are featured on this superb set including the legendary Peter Green.

Brief Info: All the early classic singles are featured on this brilliant album and what a pure joy to hear every single one play with crystal clarity with no crackle, snaps or pops. Yes even the ultra difficult ‘Oh Well’ with its moments of near silence, plays to perfection and the same goes for ‘Man of the World’ which is near impossible on the Immediate 45 single which always seems to crackle (often badly). Nothing beats an early heavy pressed copy and with a very fine centre-loading cover, this will take some beating. These early blues-based Fleetwood Mac classics are as nature intended them.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: heavy record inside an unprotected gatefold cover with a single thickness front. Put on top central inside storage, few survive unsplit, torn or tatty, this are hard to find so clean.

Cover Grade and Format: EX++, format as outlined above. Printed and made in England by Shorewood and with the ‘Patents pending’ text.

Cover Front: I can hardly believe how fine this is, so thin and dark with no protection, few will better this. Lovely deep, rich colour and no rubbing and only a tiny few, fine spine edge creases. A tiny corner chip (bottom right) but the lack of burring and softening of this fragile face is remarkable, any marks are tiny and faint.

Cover Back: A few minor edge hairline creases only and just look at the lack of ringwear, almost impossible to find like this. Absolutely superb and not to be underestimated.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Barely anything to fault and even the central entrance area is undamaged or split. Just one light crease near the bottom left of the fold hinge. Can hardly imagine this better.

Top Edges: The back lightly rubbed with slight thickening, the ultra fragile front is near perfect and very sharp and unburred.

Bottom Edges: Two or three faint and small rubs on back, the front similar to above with odd tiny chip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: One or two tiny faint chips on the closed back edge, again the front is very fine and sharp with no burring or thickening.

Spine and Text: Incredibly thin and fragile, this has to take the strain to support this heavier back with record and few survive intact and with fine looks. Solid, straight, erect but can flatten with pressure (as most will). Folded square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. Light rubbing on top foldline is near unavoidable, but here very minor indeed. All text is perfect and unworn and this never to be taken for granted.

Corners: Minor tip rubs and odd tip crease. Fine to very fine shape is retained at least.

Cover Summary: An exceptional all round example of this very wear-prone and delicate 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner: The one includes the thin paper, unlined CBS promotional inner called ‘The Inner Sleeve’. This from the early 1970s and in fine EX condition with no splits or noteworthy tears (one nick on bottom corner) and any creases few and minor. Barely any discolour or ageing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++, only downgraded from Mint(-) for one small light surface mark on side two that has NO sound at all. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence reitterated by wonderful clean sound. This is a difficult set but I have never heard it sound better or as clean as this from such an early pressed example. This was a popular record for those who bought it and so many of the early ones are trashed and unlistenable. Chalk and cheese, this is gorgeous. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely record plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a full dynamic range and very detailed sound. This has real punch and clarity, the basslines are exceptional and precise, the early pressings have the extra edge for details. Practically devoid of surface sounds and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly demanding album. Most will know ‘Oh Well’ with its twangy basslines and very quiet music, this plays beautifully and sets out the benchmark. Few copies will outperform this wonderful thick pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played carefully and has been clearly well stored and lightly handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
