Dominique Fils-Aime is a superb Canadian singer-songwriter who blends soul, jazz and blues with social commentary. Her 2018 album Nameless remains a favourite of ours and this new full length Our Roots Run Deep is no slouch either. It has an immersive cinematic feel that is brought further to life by the art's own dreamlike narrative structures. Her vocalisations are often wordless, inventive, and catchy - that take the form of mantras and hooks and prayers as they are repeated throughout. Musically this is a soul album, but a hugely original one.
