ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This is an autographed copy of FCX 654, signed by David Oistrakh on the inner sleeve of the dowel spine. The signature is undated, but is authentic. It is signature is very clear, written in black pen, with the signature block measuring approximately 8 cm in length and 6 cm in height. The inner sleeve on which it was written is of very heavy paper construction. There is also a second signature, at the opposite corner of the same side, that reads 'Daugareil', presumably the violinist Roland Daugareil. This is written in pencil and is no doubt a latter addition (in pencil) made at a later concert or signing opportunity.
It it quite fortunate to encounter a genuine Oistrakh autograph on one of his more desirable LPs, this the first French pressing of his remarkable "Devil's Trill' recording, made in 1956.
Fairly elusive in any pressing, this handsome LP – with its striking reproduction of Louis Leopold Boilly's 1824 lithograph (1761-1845) – from French Columbia (FCX 654, French pressing, blue/silver label, mono, dowel spine) preserves one of the great violin records, as well as one of glories of the David Oistrakh discography: his paring of Tartini’s Sonata in G minor “Devil’s Trill” (in the Kreisler arrangement) with Mozart’s Violin Sonata in B-flat Major K. 454 – both recorded in London on 16 February 1956. Throughout, he is accompanied by his long-time recital partner, the brilliant pianist Vladimir Yampolsky.
The tone is unmistakable, as is the generous personality, charm, and fantasy of the artist. What at first glance seems a strange coupling, proves instead quite fascinating, each work mirroring the different sides of Oistrakh’s playing – the high-flying virtuoso and the more classically restrained musician. Under Oistrakh’s bow both rank as minor masterpieces, captivating from first till last. A treasurable example of the art of the violin.
A minor note: Although Boilly's lithograph certainly takes center stage, the wonderful design of the jacket can be attributed to the wonderful Atelier Cassandre.
CONDITION:
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD+. There is very slight bumping at corners, as well as minor discoloration and creasing, but that is all. There are no seampslits, bends, or owners' markings and the jacket remains extremely solid and presentation worthy – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the dowel spine/sleeve is VERY GOOD. There is some minor writing to the paper/poly sleeve, but it is free of seamsplits and remains solid.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. There are faint spindle trails, but the surfaces are clean and quiet and the LP plays without defect – a very fine collector's copy.
