Label Conditions: Both in superb condition – indeed side two looks practically like new and struggling to find a single spindle trace. Side one has merely three small ones that probably just show on my scan. That apart as fantastic as side two. Any 42-year-old record that looks and plays like this is a treasure. This one again came from the superb, barely played collection I recently purchased.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. Around the average for the era.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce as a flipbacked original stereo, and this one comes with one of the most spectacular black and white posters ever issued. A huge item that includes the lyrics on one side the more pictures of the bizarre cover characters on the other (please see my pictures). This poster is most often missing or damaged, it only came with initial pressings and is a vital part of this classic set. Sixties records including their posters are becoming ever difficult to find. So many were put on walls and then lost, damaged or disgarded. This one is quite exceptional and remains unmounted and fully intact. Even slightly later pressings of this album omitted the poster, instead a lyric insert was included instead. Do not underestimate the rarity of this classic album with an unmounted poster inside along with a supreme record that offers nigh-on perfect sound and a very clean cover. This one should please most collectors wanting this evergreen prog classic.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Although Family never received huge commercial success, their standing as a premier late 60s progressive rock band is still considerable. Their blistering live shows revolved around the powerful Roger Chapman, who in addition to pelting the audience with tambourines, had the most incredible vibrato and vocal range. This album, their second, following the classic ‘Music in a Doll’s House’ is probably even better and is my personal favourite. Their first two albums are immense and later albums never really came close to matching them as the line-ups changed as did the music style. Beautifully constructed songs that include the classic single ‘The Weaver’s Answer’. Featuring a bizarre cover, in a similar mould to The Doors’ ‘Strange Days’ - a strange mix of individuals that look like circus performers, that could be out of a David Lynch movie. As stated this early copy includes the rare giant poster that is UNMOUNTED as well as the original flipbacked cover. The record itself looks and plays beautifully and came from a very careful one-owner-from-new collection. This was a thrill from start to finish and it will take an exceptional record, cover and poster to better it – even the inner sleeve is superb.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and this being hugely critical. A single format with a laminated front. This wraps around the three closed edges on to three rear external flipbacks. Original RSLP cat number and printed in England, this one has no credits.

Cover Front & Lamination: A very revealing cover in all respect due to it’s very black graphics. This cover had a shop sticker on the top right corner which had largely dried and fell off. This has left a very light mark, even though on a laminated surface, this does show just a little, more under light than normally viewed. A small area that has not disturbed the laminate surface at all, it just appears a fraction darker than the rest of the cover. A few creases are present too, mostly light and edge confined with just a couple of very mild and small half moons near the bottom characters foot. Now the positives – that far outweigh any of the minor negatives – the laminate is super fresh, shiny and clear and has practically avoided any lifting, that a huge bonus. A small trace near the top left corner that has received a light dink. Even under light, barely any traces of friction rubs or dulling and this front still sets a very high standard.

Cover Back: The back is in fantastic condition and is amongst the best I have ever seen. Being so black and unprotected – a clear candidate for ringwear and rubbing – this has barely any traces of either. Most of any creasing is near the top right corner and the main matt-finished back panel has just one fine one and truly does look magnificent. The lack of handling traces on this revealing surface is great news. The flipbacks are solid and clean with no damage, but do show the creases that are present, as stated, most near the top right corner. Again, the freshness is what really stands out and like the front, this sets a high standard.

Top Edge: A rub to the left corner, a small tip-in likely on a tiny laminate chip, that apart, unworn.

Bottom Edge: Practically as made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. One or two tiny burr traces being critical. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid and mainly very straight with minimal compression and all text is pristine perfect and unworn under the clear and mainly solid laminate.

Corners: A small tip rub on the top left with a possible tiny tip-in. The other three show little wear but do have small tip creases. Very fine or better shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very fine looking all-round example of this fragile late 60’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find significantly better. This is one that does not wear well being so dark, black ink is ruthlessly revealing for all blemishes and all forms of wear. Not quite for the more discerning collector but many prog fans will still enjoy it for sure. Given all the facts, the blemishes are only relatively minor and few will avoid some creases.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a heavy-duty polylined white inner that is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. This has aged little with minimal traces of any darkening, even on the seam areas. Two immaculate crisp and undamaged window circles and ultra clear lining that has mere traces of crinkle only. Any creasing tiny and faint, the lining still firmly attached and all edge unsplit with no repairs.

The Poster: EXCELLENT(+): this again being ultra critical, this is a superb double-sided poster with lyrics one side and the cover characters on the other. One of the giants of late 60s and still unmounted. No pin-holes or tape marks on this one. The black character side is simply magnificent with barely anything to fault. The one tiny blemish is a tiny (and I do mean tiny) split where the first horizontal fold meets the vertical centre fold, but this is the only one on the entire poster. All other areas of the folds are very strong and even retain practically full ink on the black ink of the front. This makes the graphic look even more impressive. A little mild crinkle towards the top but little to no real hard creasing at all. The edges are crisp and neat and all corners full intact – this is guaranteed untrimmed. The white lyric back side has a couple of small stains and traces of grubbiness. Given the age and white colour, this has also survived the years very well. With many of these mounted, taken down damaged and faded – even disgarded, finding this prog giant poster this clean and attractive is a fair achievement. No wonder, so many copies of this album are seen without it at all. Remember too, this was a limited insert.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): again hardly doing this great record full justice. A copy hardly played with just a couple of light surface marks each side that have no sound. Let’s be honest, how many vintage prog albums from this period will be totally unmarked?, few at best, this is a lovely record that will blow most others away. A very clean and attractive copy that is solidly pressed, retaining a deep black colour with very fine shine. Visually a super early copy, I emphasise any marks are very light indeed and the audio quality is nigh-on perfect. A record has sensational sound and detail and this too when played on one of the world’s most respected and clinical turntables.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb album plays beautifully with nothing to fault. Strong and powerful distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear for all with even the difficult passages retaining full clarity and sharpness. A great pressing with no pops or clicks noted and this was a pleasure to hear again especially from an original copy. Both channels are clean and clear, this vintage copy gives an open door into the recording studio and nothing spoilt my pleasure play-grading this one. Any record this age sounding so clean has to be considered exceptional and has avoided groove-damaging abuse from it’s distant past. I really enjoyed this one, the detail and power of this early band is all embedded well into these clean and unworn grooves. This is a strong, complete set and most fans and collectors will enjoy it, strong recommendation is mandatory and the poster is the icing on the cake.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
