the record, from a never-played archive collection, is mint with jet-black dazzling gloss and remains almost exactly as-new - there is merely the faintest ’shadow’ to the side two surface from almost three and a half decades of archival storage and just a couple of the very lightest and barely visible hairlines / paper scuffs - even under 500 watts of light - I was reluctant to play such an immaculate disc, so perfectly preserved - however, having thoroughly checked it, I can report that this LP plays as-new and mint throughout with startling clarity and presence - a beautifully fresh original 1970 stereo album - the stunning three colour labels are bright, clean and perfect with no spindle traces - there is just a tiny ‘bubbled’ area above the band name on the side two label (see photo) where, perhaps, a library sticker has been removed - all titles, credits, logos and background colours are sharply defined - these are among the very earliest examples, produced for the original Reprise issues of this vintage, with wonderful pale and subtle tonings - quite different to the more strident colouring seen on almost all later pressings and subsequent releases - this album is incredibly difficult to find as a very first

label pressing - the thickness and density of the record has to be experienced to be believed - it weighs a ton!

superb matt black gatefold cover with, amazingly, no circular wear - just four light creases to the front centre left edge, one to the rear upper right edge and another to the front lower centre edge - interior gatefold layout with colour photo-montage is as-new and beautiful - spine and seams perfect with no wear - all lettering and logos clear and sharply defined - all opening edges razor sharp and unfeathered - the rare original lyric insert is clean, sharp and jet black - completely unfaded with no wear - it is perfect - even the original inner sleeve is creamy white and completely mint in every way - the entire package has that wonderful, fresh off the printing press, brand new smell!

Family, in their early years, were among the very finest exponents of classic British psychedelia - this group made music to last, to stand the test of time, and, once again, I don’t think there’s a single moment wasted, lacking direction, or out of place on this, their third, incredibly memorable album - another essential document of the times and a massively important record - ‘A Song For Me ’ is becoming very rare in this kind of condition - especially on the original 3-colour ‘steamboat’ Reprise labels and complete with the artwork / lyric insert - please bid early and with enthusiasm as befits such a glorious psychedelic / progressive pop milestone - FINE LP!
