Label/Format: Reprise – original three colour format (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive and I am struggling to find any spindle marks of any note at all. Another quality record from the hardly played collection recently purchased.

Cat Number: RSLP 9001.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 157 grams. A typical heavyweight thick pressing from this label and it’s respective year.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce on the original label, especially in top playing conditions and including the elusive insert. Although this sold well in the UK, it failed to even chart in the US. Most seen have horribly worn covers and records played into submission. This is a very fine all-round example with the least wear I have yet seen on this cover (bar a corner crease), superb insert and record that offers nigh-on pristine sound. A record not available long on this format, most seen are repressings on the tan label, by 1970, the tri-colour labels were nearing their end.

Brief Info: The third Family album and last to feature on the tri-colour Reprise label format. Now with two new band members: John Weider on bass and ‘Poli’ Palmer on keyboards, flute and vibraphone, these replaced Ric Grech who went to Blind Faith and Jim King left for personal reasons. This album offered a variety of sounds and styles and proved very successful in the UK but failed to attract attention within the US. A complex recording with intricate sounds and this vintage early-pressed copy plays superbly well with practically nothing unwanted. Even Weider’s, at times wild sounding violin remains focused, precise and sharp, and there are few greater tests than this. This was a hugely enjoyable play-grade from what appears a hardly played record.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High+: very dark, gatefold, matt-finished covers with very thick and heavy records inside 40+ years equals all the ingredients for rubbing (to all areas), fading, ringwear and creasing. Few grade beyond very good these days.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: this being ultra cautious, this is a totally unforgiving sleeve. A matt-finished, unlaminated gatefold format with smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by MacNeill. This has the correct RSLP 9001 number and includes the original insert.

Cover Front: The only small issue is a top left corner which is only small and the result of a possible dink from the past. Any rubbing or other creasing is light and very fine and faint. A very difficult cover indeed and this will take a lot of beating.

Cover Back: The back is similar again, even better if anything, the lack of ringwear is a great news as so few will avoid it on the originals. Even less evidence of the corner crease, a possible tiny tip-in, but if so, hardly noticeable and the jury’s even out on it.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Barely any real wear, a small trace of the crease at the top of the fold but little else to really fault.

Top Edges: There appears barely any traces of wear at all, again if there is any touch-ins, they are tiny and well executed – again not certain.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any traces of wear and no trimming. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, mostly very straight with minimal compression and folded square. All text is near perfect and unworn which is a real achievement on this one. Any rubs or chips are tiny, few and faint, I can see no obvious tip-ins.

Corners: The top right has the light dink and a crease, but hardly major. Fine to very fine shape retained with possible tiny tip-ins to the tips as suggested already.

Cover Summary: All considered, I consider this quite an exceptional example of this very fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find significantly better. The corner crease is small but present nonetheless as are possible tiny and ultra neat touch-ins on the corner tips. Still this still eye-pleasing item should please many collectors but clearly not the perfectionists.

The Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT(++): this original matt-finished insert is in super condition with just a small faint mark on the lyric side. Little else to fault really being clean and still fresh with sharp edges and no tears. This being highly prone to fingermarks, this has barely any traces at all.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the original heavy-duty polylined white inner has aged a little with the usual browning of the glue on the seams and a few minor tone spots. Both the window circles are practically as made bar one tiny nick and the lining clear and solid as are the edges that have remained unsplit with no repairs. Minimal creasing but some crinkle. This is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual copy that is very clean with a lovely shine, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface marks, very few and super fine, only just seen critically under light (but look hard). Visually a really wonderful heavyweight record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This more progressive sounding album plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this original label pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very modestly, and all available evidence suggest barely even at all, and has been clearly carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This album will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
