Description

ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This lovely and rare LP from Les Discophiles Français (730.042, French pressing, white/blue label, mono – no stereo edition exists, dowel spine) features François Etienne's sublime account of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A Major K. 622, recorded at the Salle Apollo, Paris on New Year's Day 1951 with Maurice Hewitt conducting the Hewitt Chamber Orchestra.

Filling out the disc is Etienne's equally captivating rendition of Mozart's Clarinet Quintet in A Major K. 581, recorded on 1 June 1952 with the Quatuor Vegh, who at this time were comprised of violinist Sándor Végh and Sándor Zoeldy, violist Georges Janzer, and cellist Paul Szabo.

This pairing won the Grand Prize of the Academie François du Disque and both recordings remain fascinating discographic landmarks, not only in terms of 'Mozart on record', but also as a document of the art of the clarinet.

Incidentally, the fine the liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, in French only, were written by Claude Rostand.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of jacket is near-MINT. Really, there are almost no flaws to speak of. There is very slight and perhaps some minor discoloration along the edges, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, owners' markings, bends, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and extremely attractive in appearance – overall, a fine collector's copy.

The condition of the dowel spine is EXCELLENT. There is a bit of edgewear, but no seamsplits and the dowel remains perfectly solid and legible – an excellent collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP itself is VERY GOOD++. The surfaces are not always CD silent, but in general the playback is superb. However, if you must have a flawless or near-MINT copy, then you are advised to look elsewhere – overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
