In the hearts of many, Ernest Ansermet's The Royal Ballet Gala Performances is Number 1 among RCA Living Stereo recordings for performance and sound quality. While the bulk of Ansermet's recordings were made with L'Orchestre de la Susise Romande, there were a few with the Paris Conservatoire Orchestra and the very occasional foray into recordings with London orchestras, one of these being with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 1959, captured spectacularly by UK Decca's top recording engineer, Kenneth Wilkinson.

This definitive 200 gram 45 RPM 5 LP box set issued in 2019 by Analogue Productions, using the metal production parts created in 1996 by Classic Records for their legendary 45 RPM edition of Royal Ballet Gala, spreads the music over nine sides of ultra-quiet vinyl (the 10th side repeats side 1), reducing distortion and high frequency loss as the wider-spaced grooves let your stereo cartridge track more accurately. Bernie Grundman worked from the original analog tapes. This 2019 edition, packaged in a custom-designed slipcase with integrated lavish 22-page illustrated book, is the best of both worlds: the 1996 metal parts by Bernie Grundman for Classic Records, and the improved vinyl pressing quality achieved by Analogue Productions and Quality Record Productions 25 years later.
