Description
Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" set of 4 original acetates. These acetates are unlabeled and in a plain orange cover labeled "Trident", the recording studio where the final mix of the album was done.
These are on consignment from a gentleman who was recording for Rocket Records, Elton John's label, at the time Elton John and his band were finishing recording this album. He followed Elton John to the studio one evening and was invited to attend the "playback party", where Sir Elton and the band were to listen to the final product for the first time. These acetates were cut, and then listened to by everyone in attendance. It's been said that there were a lot of congratulations all around, as they all realized they had a hit in the making. The story continues that Gus Dudgeon, the album's producer, was unhappy with the "kick", said it didn't sound good, and wanted to remix it again, particularly on the song "Love Lies Bleeding". The acetates were thereby thrown into a trash can as everybody filed out, where they were rescued by our friend. He has kept them all these years since, and only now wishes to part with them. Based on his recollection of the events, it stands to reason that these are mixed slightly different than the version of the album we have all heard. These are THE actual acetates that were listened to by Elton John and the crew as the first "final product".
The acetates do have some slight surface wear visible. There are some visible fingerprints and occasional visible surface scratches as well. They are one sided, and there is one for each side of the album.
This is a piece of music history that you don't often come across. Dn't let this one pass you by, as we feel sure whoever buys these won't be parting with them for quite a while, as was the case with their original owner!
On Jul-12-04 at 11:00:21 PDT, seller added the following information: As a few of you looking at these have requested, we have carefully listened to these and noticed the following: There is some surface noise on these acetates, due to the wear and scratches we stated in the original description. There also is one scratch deep enough on one song to cause a skip. I am not sure if a good cleaning would help eliminate some of the excess noise. However the value in these acetates we feel is in their history, and anyone could buy "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" on CD if superior sound was a concern. They are still listenable, but the audiophiles out there be forewarned, the quality of sound has taken a downturn over the years.
