Rare lp documenting a 1974 electronic music competition judged by Columbia Princeton Electronic Music Center luminaries Bulent Arel, Mario Davidovsky, J. K. Randall, and Hubert Howe. The featured winning compositions are stunning experimental works for electronic tape using as source material simple tone generators and the punchcard-fed IBM 360/91 mainframe computer. This obscure album was brought into the spotlight by Radiohead's sampling of it in their track "Idioteque" on Kid A (Jonny Greenwood discovered a copy while on tour in the US and sampled parts of the Lansky and Kreiger pieces, see Lansky's own web page on the subject here). Overall, a great album of early electronic and computer experimentation and a must for curious Radiohead fans.

Semegen studied under Arel, Vladimir Ussachevsky, Witold Lutoslawski, Samuel Adler, Robert Gauldin, and Burrill Phillips, and worked with Otto Luening at Columbia-Princeton; she was also a sound engineer at the Collection of World Music at Columbia University where she worked with field recordings of folk music. • Lansky is a composer and researcher of computer-based music; he studied with George Perle, Hugo Weisgall, and Milton Babbit. • Wright studied with Chou Wen-Chung, Charles Dodge and Charles Wuorinen. • Recommended for those interested in artists like Ilhan Mimaroglu, Jean-Claude Risset, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Morton Subotnick, Jon Appleton, Pierre Henry, Bernard Parmegiani, Lejaren Hiller, and Tod Dockstader.
