description:
Here's a chance for a cheap copy of this ultra rare composer's private press. Blackwood plunges head-on into the underexplored territory of microtonal scales on 12 experimental electronic tracks, each using a different just intonation scale. The result is one of the most unique concept albums ever created, presenting complex, strange, and beautiful atonalities perhaps only hinted of in the work of Blackwood's forebears (such as Harry Partch, Alois Haba, Ivan Wyschnegradsky, Julian Carrillo, Lou Harrison, La Monte Young, Ben Johnston, Terry Riley, Charles Ives, John Eaton, Henk Badings, etc.). Blackwood performs this mostly using a multitracked Polyfusion synthesizer and also incorporates other unspecified 'electronic and acoustic tone-shaping devices' with the assistance of programmer Roger Dumas. Blackwood writes, "the project was to explore the tonal and modal behavior of all the equal tunings of 13 through 24 notes, devise a notation compatible with the chord progressions, and write a composition in each tuning to illustrate the chord progressions and practical application of the notation... I have long suspected that theorists are off the mark in their rejection out of hand of any tuning that does not produce consonant triads... these Etudes prove that equal tunings can produce expressively compelling progressions of hitherto alien harmonies and modes... It is my fervent hope to have found something that will inspire generations of composers to enrich the repertoire of expressive music-- something that will give a truly progressive direction to the music of the future." Over the years this record has acquired a well-deserved legendary status and it is highly recommended.
