EXPLOSION & JERRY THEMEN AFRO SURINAM SPACE SYNTH SALEGY Martha Bruining COMP LP
Hyper rare promo for Surinam’s military dictatorship of the ‘80s that was started in 1980 with a coup d'état led by (current Surinamese president) Desi Bouterse. Apart from fragments of Bouterse's speeches this compilation contains diverse music and even poetry by the legendary Dobru, the two standout tracks being by Jerry Themen, Martha Bruining and their band Explosion (also known from the Surinam Funk Force compilation).
Their songs are a tribute to anti-colonial heroes Anton de Kom and Louis Doedel and musically they are an amazing diversion from the usual kaseko, kawina or soul/funk heard on many Surinam releases. These tracks sound strangely related to salegy music from Madagascar (groups like Jaojoby, check out their recent reissue on a Sofrito 45) and are led by a spacy synth.
The revolution and Bouterse’s role in it became quite controversial and memories such as this LP haven’t been kept, consequently this record is very hard to find!
