Chicago's very own supreme Soul Sister, the glorious Etta James, took a trip South, shook hands and booties with the stellar Muscle Shoals rhtyhm section and cooked up an unadulterated platter of 100% downhome, greasy and groovy sweet-stompin' Southern Soul...

Miss James always liked her music on the raw side, and when she finally got the chance to sneak away from the string-laden 'pop-soul' tunes arranged for her back at Chess Records, she let out a howl that showed everybody and their grandmama that she was, is and always will be a blues wailer at heart.

"Tell Mama" is a monster of a jam that perfectly suits Etta's powerful, gritty pipes. The bumping bass, in-the-pocket drums, chankin' guitar and incisive horns, coupled with James' fierce belting, makes for a soul gem that is quite on par with Miss Ree's "Respect", which was cut that same year.

Slipping into a darker mood, Etta swoons and croons through the harrowingly sad and world weary ballad "I'd Rather Go Blind" - later also covered by Clarence Carter - and gets down in an unrestrained country blues bag on a version of Jimmy Hughes' "Steal Away" and the incredible wailer "The Love of My Man".

Soul Star Extraordinaire Don Covay contributed two smokingly hot, hard socking vamps of groove-based Soul, both with Covay's quintessential lyrical wittiness: the rocking "Watch Dog" and the tongue-in-cheek, equally pacey "My Mother-in-Law".

The Don is behind "I'm Gonna Take What He's Got", as well.  A smouldering track that has the same vibe and feel of Aretha Franklin's "I Never Loved a Man". The slow burning groove features Spooner Oldham's churchy organ and Sweet Inspirations-like backing vocals. Oldham also co-wrote the sentimental, beautifully low-fi ballad "Don't Lose Your Good Thing" with FAME studio's Rick Hall.

Upbeat, no-nonsense floorshakin' R&B stompers are here too; the very busy "The Same Rope" and a dedicated spin on Otis Redding's "Security", both layered in that Memphis-by-way-of-'Bama brass and the latter also sporting a thundering, lurching bass.

Miss James testifies country church style one more time on "It Hurts Me So Much", before wrapping things up with a gutbucket romp, the heavy duty soul jam "Just a Little Bit".

Etta James would continue to record wonderful music for years to come (check out the 'Come a Little Closer' LP of 1974). Nonetheless, her stint in the South undoubtedly gave us the finest, rawest slice of soul groovin' goodness this side of Chicago... and beyond.

·       CONDITION:

·       THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          The album comes with the original Cadet mail order form (postcard)

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a small cutout hole punched IN THE LABEL AREA. This affects the record, which also has a small cutout hole in the label area.

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams  (nothing significant)

-        Cover has all four corners slightly dinged (nothing significant)

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 1 (back side).

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
