Norwegian blackened metal extremists Enslaved return with their 17th full-length LP and follow up to 2023's Heimdal. Renowned for their astute devotion to folkloric, Scandinavian majesty, weaving Old Norse histories and sacred traditions into complex, progressive soundscapes, their latest offering Mid (Old Norse for "the centre" or "the middle") showcases the band turning their gaze toward the fundamental concept of the axis: the middle, the origin, and the infinite reach of the present moment. Informed by the pagan and ritualistic sun cults of old (think The Wicker Man though decidedly less British), with vocalist/bassist Grutle Kjellson describing lead single 'Solar Will' as an exploration of "archetypal conflicts, those that manifest in nature, the cosmos, mythology, and, above all, within the human mind." Complete with psych-tinged proggy flourishes, atmospheric tremolo guitar work, raspy frosted vocal howls and melancholic grandeur, Enslaved remain as pivotal mainstays at the forefront of authentically Scandinavian, artful metal extremism.
