Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. A very impressive weight for this album, issued within the oil crisis era where so many where made thin and flimsy, few were pressed this heavy.

Brief Info: Brilliant fourth album by this popular progressive trio and up there with the heaviest pressings of this album I have ever held. More often found on the later Manticore label and these will be far lighter. An album of outstanding tracks and the sound quality is breathtakingly high – a real hi-fi recording that will make worthy systems really excel – BUT, you need a top pressing and preferably one little played. This has a couple of pressing sounds on side two that last a fraction of a second, but little else in that respect and overall, this is a very soundly made copy. Virtuoso musicianship with all three members excelling again, this is high class, quality prog-rock and this is one of my personal favourites. As it should, this has the original E. J. Day cover (seen in close-up) and this in very fine condition for one that rarely wears well. For good measure, the original blue inner is included too. So a solid and overall quite impressive original example that will please many collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or close to. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. A real heavyweight, made with thick card and very well constructed. This one was printed and made in England by the E. J. Group. Includes the blue Island lined inner.

Cover Front: Lovely pastel-like artwork that has little wear. A tiny chip just below the ‘y’ in Trilogy near the bottom edge but minimal traces of rubbing or marks with barely any creasing at all. Fresh, clean and unfaded, really quite impressive for a first-made copy.

Cover Back: Apart from very slight rub traces around the rim on the left edge (look hard) and a faint rub near the top, this fragile and unforgiving back has little else to fault. Any heavier rubbing or odd blemish near the corner tips or extreme edge but this will never prove easy to find a great deal better. This includes the large Island i logo with the Basing Street address.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Truly beautiful artwork and looking practically as made, note the E J Day credits that soon changed to Robor.

Top Edges: Both very straight with only very light, patchy surface rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Pretty much the same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge is closed and very neat indeed. The opening back edge is mostly sharp with little wear and guaranteed untrimmed. One or two tiny burr traces with any thickening registering little.

Spine and Text: A very thick and robust spine and in very fine condition also. Solid, straight with just minimal compression. A couple of tiny chips possibly tipped-in but hardly even showing – but I will mention what I do see. Folded almost square, so the edges meet up very closely and only a fraction off parallel. All text is perfect and unworn and any rubbing is tiny and faint – even the folds are unworn and that is quite unusual. I have seldom seen the spine folds so unworn and these retain full ink retention.

Corners: Light to near moderate tip rubs but very fine to excellent shape is retained.

Cover Summary: An attractive all-round example of this very fragile 1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better as a very early EJD-made copy. It should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the original blue Island inner has the usual glue browning on the edges, few seem to avoid this totally, here it’s less than moderate. Minimal traces of creasing and the lining still solidly attached and both sides retaining a rich colour, so many of these fade badly over the years. This includes the original text address: ‘island records ltd basing street london w11’ and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny with an intense black finish. Heavy pressed with deep and wide grooves for super-fi sound, these have complex patterns. Any surface marks are few, light and faint with just the odd minor scuff as seen under angled light. A copy modestly played and it should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This plays up to it’s very fine visual grading and mostly even above with little to fault – and this is not the easiest records with some very quiet passages, not least the the slow build up to the final song. With such detail and complex sound embedded, this was a record that could be easily worn if not treated with due respect and many often have crackle and distortion, and then there is the pressing quality to consider at this time. This has strong, dynamic and powerful sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is at times astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This is a record with real hi-fi quality and will make any worthy system sound fantastic. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – as stated above, a couple of ultra brief pressing sounds near the start of side two, but blink and you will miss them. The odd crackle trace or sporadic tick is near impossible to avoid on a record like this, especially being played on ultra sensitive equipment – that a plain and simple fact. The beginning of ‘Abaddon’s Bolero’ is what you would expect, a very quiet, near silent beginning that gradually builds up. These types of tracks are the ultimate test for good pressings and total silence is near impossible, but this copy plays it very well with little unwanted. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, focused and precise. Generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive album. I can never expect perfection from these prog albums that always have extremes on volume and quietness (and everything else inbetween), the contact format hardly allows it and 40+-year-old records will always be a challenge, often even from new. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and high recommendation is justified.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
