LOST MIX OF "ELYSE", 1968 FREAK-FOLK MASTERPIECE, SURFACES!

I'm a big fan of the Tetragrammaton pressing of "Elyse", but the rare mix on this disc is heavier, more psychedelic and completely unheard-of until now. As you may know, the master tapes for this LP do not exist! The Orange Twin reissue was mastered from a vinyl copy. Therefore, this is probably your only chance to hear what this psych-folk monster could-have (and should have) sounded like. This mix bears a passing resemblance to the version on-release, but is distinctly more unhinged, with a heavier drum sound in general and a multitude of differences on every track.

For example, on the opening cut "Band of Thieves", the drums are much heavier, going into serious break-beat territory in the last 1/3 of the cut. There is a prominent fuzz guitar drone throughout which seems completely buried on the released version and bursts into a heavy distorted psychedelic freakout for the close of the song. The second vocal at the end of verse two is more audible. Most unique is the way-up-front brass arrangement, which sounds deranged and more like Slapp Happy or Os Mutantes than Elyse Weinberg... and that's just the first song. If you're a fan of this sort of thing, you've gotta hear it!

I'm not kidding... this pressing sounds considerably more psychedelic and interesting. It makes the original pressing seem less dynamic and muffled by comparison... and it would be way better for DJing. Once you've heard this mix, you won't go back!

Vinyl has a very light warp, some minor scratches and surface marks, but plays through in its entirety and does not skip. A few crackles appear, most noticeably at the start of side one and clear up part-way through track two. The record is mastered loudly and sounds powerful and very listenable despite those condition issues. The heavy sounds within more than compensate.

"Meanwhile, a search of the vaults at Warner Brothers, which had inherited Tetragrammaton's titles when the latter liquidated its assets, revealed a heartbreaking fact: the "Elyse" master tapes had been thrown into the garbage, as is the custom when an out-of-print title reaches 30 years of age. It was only two years too late. Fortunately, Orange Twin located a mint condition original LP and re-mastered from the vinyl. The resulting CD sounds as good as one could expect of such a compromised source, though it does leave one slightly anguished that the masters are gone forever. It matters little to Andrew Rieger, though. "It's just a great record," he declares, "and anybody who likes good music should hear it."
