Label/Format: RCA – intense matt black with embossed ‘M’ tax code on side one with deep cut inner circle near the hole. The embossed ‘M’ is totally unworn, chipped, rubbed or flattened(Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both look fantastic: very clean and attractive with only relatively light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: RC 24001.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 115 grams. A substantial weight for a ten inch record.

Rarity & Information: Rare: one of the earliest Presley ‘long players’ and made all the more important in his massive catalogue as being a 10 inch album. Although this record only has eight songs, this is classified as a full ‘album’. A thing of real beauty and rarely do I offer records this old, this actually being older than myself and that could be a first for me. Issued at a time when 78 rpm records were still being sold, you can imagine what conditions this lovely ten inch album will normally be found in. Consider what this would have been played on too, how many will actually play well today on modern, far more clinical equipment? This vintage, almost antique mono record was never designed to be played on 21st-century stereo equipment, let’s be honest, but this little diamond still sounds fantastic. This is the genuine original UK pressing, much, much rarer than the US version. The cover’s of this period were true works of art, but very flimsy, delicate and fragile, few survive devoid of significant damage and considerable wear. The flipbacks were beautifully shape with circular shape that fitted around the record’s rim size, most seen are torn to shreds and often with large segments missing altogether. This gem still even includes its original (ten inch of course) polylined inner sleeve that has the ‘British and Foreign Patents Pending text’, it survives in superb condition. The back of the main cover has text I so often emphasise on my adverts, especially regarding mono records. The warning about blunt needles, I have taken a close-up of this to show this important warning that, unfortunately, many, if not most people ignored. Thus so many mono records sound so poor today especially when played on equipment outside their comfort zone. The price guides put a high value and on this, and I feel certain it will increase still further in the next issue – and they tend to undervalue everything. This beautiful and almost unique 10 inch album is rare, make no mistake. How many UK examples in real terms will survive much better will be few. Not quite connoisseur standard, but most realistic Presley fans will know few of these will be found much better these days, for those who purchased this over 52 years ago, most played it into submission with the type of results most collectors will be aware of. With all considered, I truly consider this an exceptional copy and a joy to listen too and a beautiful object to own, hold and treasure. They will not surface often so intact with very fine sound and great visuals.

Brief Info: One of the earliest Presley albums, this being the eight songs from his second full length movie of the same name. To put things into perspective on its age, this 10 inch album was issued when 78 rpm records were still on sale, but this record is made with standard ‘unbreakable’ vinyl, not the fragile material of the fast-rotating singles (thank goodness). It includes the evergreen popular hit single ‘Teddy Bear’ that everyone will know. I will not dwell on histrionics about the man, most all of any interested collectors for this piece will know all there is to know, and I am sure more than me. I rarely offer Presley records or even records of this era and age, but when I do, I like to think they are special enough to do so. Clearly this is rare and it plays beautifully for most all and has a lovely cover and superb inner. A scarce opportunity for fans to own this lovely early item.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High++ (pretty much off the scale really). Immensely fragile and thin, most that surface will be in tatters.

Cover Grade and Format: EX+ but it has a smallish back split that has been repaired to the best of my abilility, this being on the perilous opening edge towards the bottom. A ten inch, fully laminated single format that has two huge rear external flipbacks. These are arc cut to fit the shape of the record’s rim. The cover is flat with no spine like a 60s EP. Printed and made in England. The card is ultra thin and fragile and quite how this and any other lucky ones survive so fine is beyond me.

Lamination – Front & Back: The front portrait of the young Elvis is stunning and looks truly beautiful. The only wear of any note is rubbing on the bottom corner areas. The back panel text and graphics are equally immaculate. The split on the left edge of the back I carefully repaired the best I could and now this is back fully intact. There are NO pieces missing at all, this was a clean, but not straight tear. It’s visual impact is only low being situated where it is. The laminate on all surfaces is superb and all fully adhered with no lifting, peeling or blistering – how many will still be like that? Even more incredibe is the rich and luscious shine and clarity, yes this has survived with barely any traces of friction rubs or dulling, that wonderful portrait will rarely be seen better or fresher. Remarkable also is the lack of noteworty creases, any present are very fine surface or hairline types and most all are on the very edges. The flipbacks are lovely and those vintage shaped ones are always extra special, most seen on early jazz or classical albums, and rarely intact. This pair are undamaged with barely any real wear. The top one is little short of perfect, the bottom has one central surface crease, the right corners have tiny tip creases only and both retain superb shine with clearn ends. Any burring is tiny, the top one’s ends are ultra crisp and neat. I love the warning of blunt needles, a warning most unfortunately ignored, thus so many mono records are badly worn and unlistenable – not this one. Could not resist a close-up picture of this warning. A cover is immense historical importance, ‘The King’ on this very rare ten inch album will rarely be seen better on a UK example.

Top Edge: Unworn bar corner tip rubs. Incredibly straight too which is a highly unlikely fact.

Bottom Edge: A few, mostly small to tiny surface chips. Rubbing near the corner areas, more on left, again straight and all closed edges have NO splits or repairs.

Left Edge: A small few tiny surface chips only, again straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no real ‘wear’ or feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. As mentioned already, I have repaired an approximate one inch split on the rear opening. This falls on a ‘white’ area that has NOT damaged any text or graphic, thus of far less significance and being low down on this edge, it has little visual impact as the eye is not drawn to it. Record enters on this edge.

Corners: The corners have all rubbed ranging from light to moderate. Most on bottom left with a rub on the edge for around three quarters of an inch.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this immensely delicate and ultra fragile 50’s cover, one that will prove incredibly difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most realistic collectors.

The Inner: EX++, just very mild discolour stops this getting a Mint(-) grading. Again I have to mention some text included on this vintage polylined 10 inch inner. ‘A light-weight pick-up with a stylus weight of not more than 10 grams’, this was the recommendation of the time. Most modern tracking weights rarely exceed two grams and most track less than that, 10 gram tracking weights soon wear delicate grooves, again no small wonder soo many mono records are trashed. This inner has the ‘British and Foreign Patents Pending’ text and is barely even creased with no edge splits. Truly, I can hardly hardly imagine finding this rare 10 inch inner sleeve better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VG++ and I really think this is undergraded at this. I know age should not really be a factor for condition, but let’s be honest, how many examples of this 52 year-old record will ever be found EX or better, unless a freak unplayed copy surfaces. A very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence and there’s the difference. This has been ground into the ground by pile-driver blunt needles which is proven by the high quality of the sound. It has surface marks, yes, how many won’t have? The difference being these have no sound. There are NO deep penetrating scratches, hence NO pops or clicks were noted, again how many will be able to say that? Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This hugely important Presley record plays above its highly respectable visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, dynamic sound that is pretty much devoid of any distortion with all frequencies sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound and this is a genuine high fidelity recording (which the cover proudly states). Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted. Clearly silence for a 1957 mono record is a near impossible ask, but this truly astonished me and any unwanted sounds are minimal and low-level. One milli-second trace noted once on ‘Teddy Bear’, but little else. Even the quieter songs play well, minor low-level surface sound just evidence but nothing spoilt my thorough enjoyment playing this. Just enough to remind the listener what he/she is actually listening too, a very, very old mono record. Remember, I am playing this on a Linn LP12, one of the most revealing turntables ever made, this too through a Naim amp into a pair of very modern B&W speakers. Most records of this era would not have a chance, but this little diamond excelled and the man could almost have been in the room performing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp and lacking that single channel ‘mono noise’ so many will have. I am certain this record has been played modestly, okay it has surface marks, but feel sure it has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. The cover split is a blemish but the record has no damage caused by needle drops or jolts. Practically nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
