Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only a light and fine spindle mark on side two, practically nothing on side one.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. About average for its era.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Quite rare as a first issue. Still a lesser-known artist at this time and this album did not even chart in the UK. The most success it achieved was in Norway. The copies that did sell were on the strength of his rise to superstardom after it’s issue, but next-to-no interest on release.

Brief Info: Issued as an original sound track recording but this has more than enough Elton vocal songs to be almost classified as a ‘proper’ album within his normal catalogue. A bit like the Pink Floyd albums ‘More’ and ‘Obscured by Clouds’, with all original material written by John and Bernie Taupin. A vastly underrated work that deserves far more attention and credit than it normally attracts. There are some instrumental songs but plenty of Elton vocals too and I really enjoyed, what was my very first hearing of this early record. A lovely early copy too that sounds fantastic and clearly hardly even played by the one-and-only owner. The unmissable magenta cover is so wear-prone, but here looks lovely with little. The record little short of immaculate and for fans of the legendary singer-songwriter, a better copy will prove hard to find.

Cover Grade and Format: Excellent (or very close to). A single unlaminated format that was printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse.

Cover Front: Highly challenging to find early examples looking this nice. Most suffer badly from heavy ringwear, this has avoided it with just minor rim impression but no ink removal. Clean, vibrant and fresh looking, this has only faint traces of any grubbiness or creasing and only very small traces of edge rubs encroaching into view, this pretty-much confined to the top. Thin and fragile, this will prove difficult to find much nicer.

Cover Back: Even hard with so much solid single colour, these are beyond difficult. Again faint rim rubs but no rink removal. One light crease near the bottom left corner and ultra faint hairlines near the edges that barely even show. Even with minor traces of wear, I truly consider this exceptional and importantly, it still looks attractive.

Top Edge: Patchy rubbing ranging from very light (right) to near moderate (near left corner).

Bottom Edge: Only very light rub traces.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: This has lightish rubbing near both ends and small traces on the folds. One small central rub has partially erased some character parts on the word ‘Original’, that apart all other text present and unworn. Still a solid, if somewhat thin spine, straight with little compression, and overall, very decent for what is a obviously a wear-prone edge.

Corners: The corners have rubbed but not in a major way and all retain very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this very fragile 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors and compared to some I have seen, this is way, way above average.

The Inner: The plain white unlined inner is practically Mint as made, little to add, its fantastic.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-), A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence and offering two virtually immaculate playing surfaces with any surface blemishes minuscule. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This vintage Elton John/Bernie Taupin record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

All records are posted in professional thick boxes (NOT Mailers or Cruciforms, these do not offer maximum protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
