Label/Format: Harvest - original format with gramophone text on rims. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Less than moderate spindle marks, these show more with angled viewing, they are thicker than fine on this one. NO ink has been removed and they look attractive with no wear around the hole rims. This very early pressing also includes ‘WEE MEE NIT’ on the labels.

Cat Number: SHVL 810.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: A very impressive 155 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Complete early pressings are elusive. This also includes a genuine Harvest Records ‘WEEMEENIT’ promotional insert. This copy came from a BBC radio DJ from the 60s and 70s.

Brief Info: The fifth and final EBB album on Harvest and one of least easy to find, especially complete. A band that always gave an audience a great time at the festivals between 1970-73 - they almost became a staple diet at these events. Not strictly ‘progressive’, but the label was, so I have listed as such. As stated above this was a Radio DJ’s copy, hence very early and with a rare, and totally genuine, Harvest promo insert. All the parts are included: the plastic silk-screen bag, the lyric inner sleeve and the gatefold cover-band-poster. All parts flimsy and fragile. These parts are not pristine and few ever will be, but a very fine sold all-round copy that many fans and Harvest collectors will enjoy.

Outer Bag: Around EX, not easy grading these. Still attractive and few ever survive without major edge splits or tears. This one has just a small split on the left of the top entrance, it’s about three-quarters of an inch. No others, all the other edge parts are solid with the ends creased, how many won’t be, let’s be honest. Still quite clear with minimal fogging. The top opening neat and the surfaces only have fine marks but little has affected the silk-screen band artwork, text or logo which still look great. The lack of major edge splits and erosion to the arwork is unusual on these fragile plastic bags and I do not consider my visual grading of this delicate piece exaggerated.

Inner Cover-Poster: Again around EX. A thin gatefold card poster-sleeve. Also fragile and clearly prone to rubbing and creasing. This has minimal and light rubbing, the outside fold has rubbed more and has NO tipping-in. A little mild creasing, mainly to the right edge, the foldline hinge solid. The plastic outer cover offers little to no protection to this and again, this grading is more than fair. The inside has fantastic live EBB artwork, the outers arty graphics.

The Inner Sleeve: Yet again, around EX but the owner put a piece of clear tape on each closed edge, these appear to have split which is not great surprise as record movement in transit would have been very significant in such a flimsy cover that offered pretty much no protection. It was unlined and printed in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. Neat and quite clean with a wide recessed top opening. The tape has stopped any more serious damage and this was later lined with a Japanese anti-static inner to protect both sleeve and record still further.

Harvest Insert: Near Mint, this is guaranteed genuine, the thick paper is yellow one side (with text and logo) and plain white the other). It has the Harvest logo and address as a letterhead. The text reads: ‘For further information concerning Edgar Broughton Band contact:- WEEMEENIT at the above address’. Clearly rare, possibly unique with this record, but was not a standard part of the set. Certainly a nice artefact for the Harvest collector.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX at least. A super visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed – an exceptional 155 gram pressing for a 1973 album – this a time when vinyl was being used sparingly. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence as was the case from most all from this source. A few fine surface marks or hairlines only and most all superficial with no effect on sound. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very early pressed example plays even above its high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and just a one or two faint, gentle ticks were noted, a couple at the very start of the record are barely audible. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Practically nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this elusve final Harvest EBB album. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. However if any of the fairly minor blemishes on record or packaging are an issue, do not bid.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. I cannot guarantee total accuracy for colours however but most will be very close. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
