The act that just couldn't be caged, Eddie Palmieri and Harlem River Drive broke into one of America's most infamous penitentiaries for a 1971 set that saw release on two volumes of LPs. For this, first volume, Palmieri and company work the crowd with a torrid set of songs, including "Pa la Ocha Tambo," "Muñeca," and a fervent closer, "Azucar." Electric guitar and bass (from Cornell Dupree and Hank Anderson, respectively) modernize the proceedings quite well, and Palmieri's brother Charlie sits in on organ with a special feature for "V.P. Blues." Poet Felipe Luciano also stirs up the crowd, as does Paquito Navarro's declaration, "For all mankind, there should be never no walls, never no fears, only one thing in life: liberty in the coming years."

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging. Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold

-         The cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam and spine (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a minor 'bump' (dent) on the spine (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks
