New York-based keyboardist Hubert Eaves III made just one solo album, and it arrives fully formed, with the authority of someone who didn't need a second pass. Recorded in the mid-70s, it draws from the same spiritual-jazz lineage as Strata-East and Black Jazz, but feels a bit more lean and more electrically charged. Time spent alongside Norman Connors, Gary Bartz and Carlos Garnett elucidates the writing and moves with absolute conviction.'Call To Awareness' plants its feet in a functional groove, while 'Slow Down' stays coiled, extracting weight from patience. 'Flead Dancing' slips free of category and 'Song For Marlene' carries a deep, unforced warmth. With Reggie Lucas, Mtume and Rene McLean involved, it remains singular and quietly astonishing.
