Label/Format: Deram (Please see my label picture).

Label Conditions: Both clean and attractive with only very light and faint spindle marks. This has mimimal traces of grubbiness on the white areas and that is not so easy on the early Deram labels.

Cat Number: SML 1050.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: Scarce: this stereo version is seen more often than the elusive mono but neither are seen too often and this one has the earliest matrixes.

Brief Info: East of Eden’s second album and for me easily their best, this is very progressive jazz tinged rock music and their most challenging and compelling set ever. With winds and violin, this at times reminds me of Zappa’s Mothers in the late 60s and one wind solo reminded me of Bunk Gardener’s amazing one on ‘Uncle Meat’. After this album, and a change of label to Harvest, the mood of their music mellowed and became far easier and less adventurous. The debut and ‘Snafu’ remain their most satisfying works and are highly sort-after by prog collectors. An elusive record and this is a strong copy with a little worn cover and a very clean, modestly played record. With the complex sounds and critically revealing reed and string instruments fully focused with no clipping or distortion, this will prove very difficult to find better.

Cover Grade and Format: EX or very close to, the back especially is highly prone to rubbing and ringwear. A single format with the front laminated with Clarifoil that wraps around the closed edges and on to the back via the spine. The back has the mono/stereo peep-hole with the inner filling the circle to denote if a mono or stereo copy. The blue inner on this one confirms a stereo pressing. Printed and made in England by Clout & Baker Ltd.

Lamination & Front: The front has shiny, clear laminate that is near fully adhered with any minor lifting, a very fine sliver on the spine. This is exceptional in that respect, as Clarifoil’s trait for tightening and lifting is well-known. This has hardly any creasing. or marks. A record rim dull is only seen under light and is only quite mild. This front is up there the best I have seen for this title.

Cover Back: The very dark back is obviously prone to rubbing and ringwear and this has been affected a little but only very lightly. Any ring arcs are light and faint and in context for this cover and type, very light. Slight, mainly faint rub traces but the artwork still looks very nice. The peep-hole is pristine with no damage or wear.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both show hardly any signs of wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, fairly sharp with little wear and no feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Quite solid, quite straight with any compression mild. All text is present and unworn under the solid laminate that is unpeeled. Just one tiny crack near the top corner.

Corners: All very neat with few traces of wear.

Cover Summary: A fine, solid excellent example of this elusive Deram cover, it should please many collectors but not the perfectionists (few examples of this one ever will being honest).

The Inner: A fabulous practically Mint(-). This one’s blue to denote a stereo record is inside, this colour code polylined inner fills the cover’s back peep-hole. Looking superb and date coded 4-70 proving the exact vintage of this copy. The window is immaculate and the lining clear and all edges secure with no splits (or repairs). This has aged little and is as clean as they get and unusually has barely any traces of glue darkening.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Critically graded EX and without any doubt, hardly played. A few ultra fine and faint surfaces marks are just evident under ligh, but how many 40-year-old records will have none, let’s be honest. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with a very fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. Visually a super stereo copy that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant prog album plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult and challenging album. Reeds and violin with the more traditional rock instruments, this will test out any record the age and complexity. The final song on side one is very strange and includes a bizarre repetitive loop on the run-out grooves. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp with excellent focus and clarity. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, the change in musical direction was a disappointment generally for fans who had the taste for this album and this really is a prog-classic. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
