The reunited Dokken recorded the acoustic One Live Night during their 1995 tour in an attempt to cash in on the "unplugged" fad of the '90s. Unfortunately, most of the group's material isn't well suited to this setting — after all, the band were heavy metal arena-rockers, writing big bombastic choruses with crunching chords. Dedicated fans will find versions of "Tooth and Nail," "Into the Fire" and "Alone Again," as well as covers of the Beatles' "Nowhere Man" and Emerson, Lake & Palmer's "From the Beginning," intriguing, but it's only a curiosity.

Like 1995's Dysfunctional, Shadow Life captures the reunited Dokken going through the motions. The band sounds tighter than before, due to a year of touring and also the talents of producer Kelly Gray, but the group still has trouble writing memorable hooks and songs. In such a setting, George Lynch still shines — after all, he doesn't need a full song to demonstrate his technical prowess — but the lack of real songs makes Shadow Life a chore.
