Description

The guitarist Django Reinhardt was the first great jazz musician to come out of Europe; indeed, until the Sixties he was the only one. Born in Belgium in 1910 to gypsy parents, he played professionally in his teens , but when he was 18 a fire in his caravan seriously damaged his left hand.  Despite this (usually career-ending) injury, he thrived and became an international hero after the second world war. He played with Duke Ellington, Coleman Hawkins, Benny Carter, but his collaborations with violinist Stephane Grappelli are probably the most famous. This particular record on the HMV label (CLP 1389) was released in 1960 in the UK and are taken from recordings made between 1935 and 1949.  There is NO editing, No digital restoration, and NO dubbing of additional instruments. This is pure Django as his guitar playing was meant to be heard....brilliant, eccentric, and completely original. I strongly recommend reading the notes (using the zoom feature) by Alexis Korner at the back of the sleeve.

Condition of Lp Jacket: Near Mint(-).....considering the age of this sleeve this cover has held up very well. Some laminate lift to the front portion that is not too distracting because beneath the missing laminate there is additional lamination!!  Minor corner wear and the usual yellowing to the white areas at the back. Flipbacks are all secure and in good order. A beautiful example of this hard to find title.

Condition of Record: Excellent(+) Magnificent playing copy and a near-perfect example of this extraordinary vintage Mono recording. The ambiance created by this music is so special and considering the recording equipment used, the detail in the instruments is astonishing. There is a bit of surface noise on some of the tracks but this can sometimes be confused with the limitations of the master tape itself.  The playing surfaces are nearly flawless and the gorgeous labels with their gold metal print on scarlet background show only minor evidence of foxing.  Truly a timeless artifact.
