The Dixie Cups are an American pop music girl group of the 1960s. They are best known for their 1964 million selling disc, "Chapel of Love".

The group hit the top of the charts in 1964 with "Chapel of Love," a song that Phil Spector, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich had originally written for The Ronettes. The trio consisted of sisters Barbara Ann and Rosa Lee Hawkins; plus their cousin Joan Marie Johnson, from the Calliope housing project in New Orleans. They first sang together in grade school. Originally they were to be called Little Miss and the Muffets, but were named The Dixie Cups just prior to their first release.

By 1963 the trio had decided to pursue a career in music and began singing locally as the Meltones. Within a year Joe Jones, a successful singer in his own right with the Top Five 1960 single "You Talk Too Much," became their manager. After working with them for five months, Jones took them to New York, where record producers / songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller signed them to their new Red Bird Records.

Grading Information

M = Mint

Absolutely perfect in every way. Certainly never been played, possibly even still sealed

NM = Near Mint

The record should show no obvious signs of wear. A 45 RPM or EP sleeve should have no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling. An LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits or other noticeable similar defects. No cut-out holes, either. Of course, the same should be true of any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves and the like. Basically, an LP in near mint (NM) condition looks as if you just purchased it from a record store.

Very Good Plus

VG+ = Very Good Plus

A Very Good Plus (VG+) record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experiences. Slight warps that do not affect the sound (DNAP) are "OK". The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. The center hole will not have been misshapen by repeated play. In general, if not for a couple things wrong with it, this would be Near Mint. All but the most mint-crazy collectors will find a Very Good Plus (VG+) record highly acceptable.

VG = Very Good

Many of the defects found in a VG+ (Very Good Plus) record will be more pronounced in a VG (Very Good) disc. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound. Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. The same will be true of picture sleeves or LP covers.

G = Good

Good does not mean Bad! A record in Good (G) condition can be put onto a turntable and will play through without skipping. But it will have significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear (on a styrene record, the groove will be starting to turn white). A cover or sleeve will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the object.

All records are mechanically washed and vacuumed to insure great sound quality.

We are not perfect and mistakes happen occasionally. If you get what you feel is a mis-graded record, please email us and let us know so the issue can be resolved. We will always work to resole any legitimate issues in a prompt, courteous and professional manner.

Packaging Information

Each disc is shipped in a brand new paper sleeve. The cover is placed in a brand new plastic protective sleeve (excluding box sets) to insure that it arrives safely along with the disc outside of the cover to eliminate seam splits during shipping. Sealed LP's are always shipped intact and unopened.

All LP's are shipped in a sturdy new mailer designed specifically for shipping records with one heavy cardboard insert to help prevent bending. Additional padding may be added at $.30 per pad. Please let us know if you require additional padding. This does not mean that they are bullet proof and at times the postal service can and will break things. When this happens you need to contact your local post office.

Once your item(s) leave our hands they are at the mercy of the postal system. Photographic Information All item photos shown in this offering are actual original untouched photos of the item(s) unless otherwise noted. We do not use stock photos of item, wysiwyg (what you see is what you get). The only alterations to photos is that some items may require that we block out name labels etc. for privacy reasons. This is readily identifiable by the blacked out rectangular area in the photo. These blacked out areas are not defects but rather digital alterations to the photo and not the actual item.
