Dion’s Born to Be with You occupies a singular place in both his career and Phil Spector’s production legacy. Recorded mainly in 1974 but withheld until October 1975, it was issued on the short-lived Phil Spector Records label in partnership with Warner-Spector in the U.K. Spector, who had admired Dion’s early doo-wop work, produced six of the eight tracks, while Phil Gernhard and the team of Cashman & West handled the remaining sessions. The lengthy delay between recording and release only added to the album’s mystique, especially given the famously intensity-driven atmosphere of Spector’s sessions and Dion’s later description of the results as sounding like “funeral music.”
