This auction is for the:
Vintage COLUMBIA 3 LP 78RPM RECORD SET
CHARLES DICKENS' A CHRISTMAS CAROL
with BASIL RATHBONE starring as SCROOGE
Includes a Hollywood Cast
Columbia Records Set M-MM-521
The Entire Set Appears to be in Very Good to Excellent Condition (I'm unable to play it)
This vintage record set is probably from the 1940s or 50s, there's no date anywhere that I could see, either on the LPs or the jacket. I was born in 1952 and I don't recall ever hearing this played (although I'd like to), so that's why I'm thinking this may date from the 40s. Mom and Dad liked Basil Rathbone, especially his Sherlock Holmes movies, so I would think they would have played it some around Christmas time. Perhaps by the time I came along and was at an age to possibly recall something like this (late 50s or so), they'd replaced their record player with one that couldn't play 78s, I don't know for sure.
I have a record player but not one that plays 78s. Like I said, I'd love to listen to this, I like Rathbone myself, but I don't want to spend several hundred dollars to go and get another record player that can play 33s, 45s and 78s. We're trying to downsize here, not be buying a lot more stuff. Anyway, I looked closely at all three LPs and they each looked really good, I didn't see any scratches or marks anywhere, front or back.
There is no official indication that these records are 78s, although I tried one on my player and it played r e a l s l oooooo www at 33 RPM. I don't know when record manufacturers switched over to 33 RPM LPs, so whenever it was, this set is definitely older than that.
The album jacket is in real good condition as well. It shows a minimum of shelf wear, but that is it. The binding and the spine are tight, and in very good condition.
Again, just looking at the excellent condition the records appear to be in, the winning bidder may be getting a real nice collectible here. Some of the Hollywood cast include (I'm familiar with a few of the names): Elliot Lewis; Jay Novello - plays Bob Cratchet; Arthur Q. Bryan - plays a couple of parts in this feature - I first became familiar with him as the original voice to Elmer Fudd in the Looneytunes cartoons, before Mel Blanc came along; Francis X. Bushman; Tommy Cook plays Tiny Tim and Scrooge as a boy; and Lurene Tuttle. There are 5 to 6 more actors involved with this production.
This item comes from a smoke-free home and is in very good to possibly excellent condition (depending on how the records play), especially for its age.
