-Artist / Group: Deverons

-Mini bio: Canadian garage-rock band formed in 1962 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The original group comprised of four St. John's High School students, guitarists and friends Boris Pawluk and Derek Blake, Edd Smith on bass and drummer John Gach. Because none of them sang, their limited repetoire consisted of covering instrumentals by the likes of The Ventures, The Fireballs, The Chantays, The Surfaris, Duane Eddy and any other guitar-based instrumental group of the day.

-In late 1962, Burton Cummings talked the group into letting him sing a few songs with  them, and soon their repetoire wasn't so limited anymore.

-While Cummings was only 14, The Deverons landed a few shows, where they were happy to play just for free, just for the experience, playing churches and community halls.

-Over the next year or so the lineup (after some members left and were replaced) became solidified with Burton Cummings (vocals/keyboards/saxophone) Ed Smith (Bass), Bruce Decker on rhythm guitar and Derek Blake on lead guitar with Ron Savoie on drums. They were now coverings artists such as Tommy Roe, Gene Pitney, Sam Cooke and whatever else was hot on the airwaves at the time.

-Lorne Saifer, a friend of Cummings, became their booking agent and they also talked Daryl Burlingham, Winnipeg radio station CKY's music director, into being their official manager. By this time the band had become one ofthe hottest  commodities in  Winnipeg, and had toured sporadically throughout Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and even into Minnesota, even though they were all still 17.

-Daryl Burlingham snuck them into the station's studio late one night and they banged off four cuts before staff came in the next morning, the cuts were She's My Lover b/w Blue Is The Night (Reo 8892), Yes I Do b/w Leave Her Alone (Reo ????). They shopped the tapes around and scored a deal with iconic Canadian Record Label, Reo Records.

-Not confident in the band's writing abilities, the Reo label execs took the boys into a Minnesota studio and had them record some songs written by 'professional' session writers. By the end of 1965 Lost Love B/W Feel All Right (Reo 8916) was released, followed shortly thereafter by another pair of covers, Farmer John b/w She (Reo 8959). She's My Lover b/w Blue Is The Night (Reo 8892) was the next single.The band was growing in popularity when Yes I Do b/w Leave Her Alone (Reo ????) was released next before the end of 1965, both written by Burton Cummings. The groups' last single was released in 1966 She Is My Life b/w You Can't Buy Me (Reo 8930). Clearly, the singles were not issued in numerical sequence.

-The band's regional success continued, but Cummings was approached by The Guess Who in late 1965 to join them to replace their recently departed keyboardist, and in January of 1966, Cummings, now barely 18, accepted, and went on to head Canada's most influential rock group ever, then went on to an incredibly successful solo career.

-Farmer John, a cover of The Premiers big 1964 hit is a fast tempo guitar driven garage rocker with gritty lead vocals, hot guitar throughout including a sizzlin' solo from Derek Blake, hot keyboards, driving bass and drums and is arguably their best recording ever!

-She, although released as the 'A' side is the weaker of the two sides and is a fast-tempo rocker with excellent melodic vocals, horns, driving bass, drums, keyboards and a kinda cool trumpet solo.

-Visual grade: VG+. Although visually a VG+ due to many light surface scratches, both sides of the record play with excellent fidelity, no distortion, and while there is a tiny bit of background noise at the lead-in, once the needle hits the grooves and the music starts, the background noise pretty much disappears. She looks worse than Farmer John and is graded VG, but even so, because pressed on pure vinyl plays quietly with excellent fidelity and no distortion whatsoever.

Record grading:

(M) Mint: We don't use this grade as no record is perfect, even SS records can have tiny flaws.

(SS) Still sealed: Still sealed in the factory shrink wrap.

(M-) Mint minus: A nearly perfect record. The record will show no obvious signs of wear. Original finish intact. Picture sleeves should have no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling.

(VG+) Very good plus: The record will show some signs that it was played or otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some slight signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or light scratches. Picture sleeves may have some slight ring wear, lightly turned up corners, or a small seam split.

(VG) Very good: Many of the defects found in a VG+ record or sleeve will be more pronounced in a VG record or picture sleeve. Groove wear may be noticeable, the record may have light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound, but the foreign noises will be less prominent than the music. Picture sleeves may have quite prominent ring wear. Creases, folds, seam splits and tears will be more obvious and may appear on all three sides, and there may be writing as well.

(VG-) Very good minus: Foreign noises may be about as prominent as the music. The record still plays through without skipping. The picture sleeve will have more significant seam splits, perhaps to the point where they were taped closed, and highly obvious ring wear and heavier writing. Can serve as a filler until a better one comes along.

(G) Good: We seldom offer a good record for sale unless it is particularily rare for the following reasons: Foreign noises are louder than the recorded music and listening can be distracted by the noise. May or may not play through without skipping, but should be so noted. Picture sleeves are so badly seam split that they may not be able to contain the record within.Tears, folds, writing and ring wear may be overwheming.
