Death of Samantha: If Memory Serves 12" (new)
St Valentine Records "If Memory Serves Us Well" is the first album released in 24 years by Cleveland underground rock legends Death of Samantha. It is a double-LP vinyl, with insert poster and liner notes by Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Robert Pollard (Guided by Voices) and Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees). The LP marks the return of Death of Samantha, which released three albums and an EP on Homestead Records. The band reunited with its original line-up, recording "If Memory Serves Us Well" while practicing in the studio for a reunion concert. DoS was so happy with the results that it decided to release the album, which features 18 songs that span the career of the band, from 1984-1990. Death of Samantha performed with Nirvana, Sonic Youth, the Replacements, Smashing Pumpkins, the Gun Club and Jesus and Mary Chain. After breaking up, members of DoS went on to play in Cobra Verde, Guided by Voices, Gem, Sweet Apple and Nada Surf. Robert Pollard: "I really dug and unabashedly attempted to emulate a lot of what was going down in Cleveland in the early to mid 80's... My favorite by far was Death of Samantha. There were the most inventive and also rocked harder than anyone else in the pack. I remember being blown away by the arena rock leap forward of where "The Woman Wear the Glory and the Men Wear the Pants". I got into their sense of humor, the snippets, samples, titles and album covers. The fact that they had put out all their albums on Homestead. The way they dressed. Their employment of television and movie culture. The whole package. Plus, they flat out could write songs and play. Their music, art and attitude projected and perpetuated the same warped sense of depravity and alienation that was already indigenous to the Cleveland/Akron area from the early 70's on. They later became good friends, labelmates and very briefly, bandmates and to this day, a source of great pride. I'm absolutely thrilled that they got it all back together to make another record."
