Death: Scream Bloody Gore 12"

 Relapse Records

DEATH's legendary 1987 debutScreamBloody Goreis more than justan untouchable album - upon its release, it was positively genre-creating.ScreamBloody Gorefounded the quintessentialdeath metalsound, with more tormented riffs, screams, and leads than the world had ever imagined, and established Chuck Schuldiner's inimitable phrasing and songwriting style as the most singular voice in the burgeoning genre. Today, the albumis viewed unanimously as one of the all-time most important cornerstones of death metal.

Our take: Relapse's haphazard revisitation of the Death catalog continues. They reissued Leprosy a while back, and now here's the reissue of the band's seminal first album, Scream Bloody Gore. While Leprosy is probably the band's most famous record (and it is, without a doubt, chock full of classic tracks), I've always slightly preferred its predecessor Scream Bloody Gore, which I think edges out Leprosy thanks to a slightly thicker, more bottom-heavy sound and what seems like slightly more of the proggy mid-paced parts that are my favorite part of the band's sound. I mean, ultimately I'm thankful that I don't have to live in a world where I have to choose between those two albums. If you have even a passing interest in death metal you should definitely be familiar with both of them, and while I question some of Relapse's tactics on this reissue (the foil stamping on the cover is kind of cool, but redoing the fonts, blowing out the colors, and modernizing the back cover layout, not so much), this reissue is certainly provides an adequate substitute for dropping $75-$100+ on an original pressing.    About Sorry State:
